What the Mariner's are doing now just makes me sick and its going
to get worser. Starting pitching other than King Felix has been
game losers. Wounded starting pitching in the likes of Cy Young
runner-up Iwakuma, James Paxton who did more than excellent
before gettin injured...6-8 weeks before he's back. T Walker is
very close to getting back into the starting rotation. So theres
that. Then it would be the M's hitting so far. Nobody on fire
hitting. Zennino leading with about .290, Cano manages enough
"soft-hits" to keep his average about .275 or so. If you ask me
the same players left from last years team are doing the same
thing they did last year...not hit. Micheal Saunders just cannot
hit for an average above .200, Kyle Seager is hitting below .200,
Brad Miller who hit .400 during spring training and won the
shortstop job. I love to see Brad come to the plate but he's got
some bad celestial influence going on and he cant seem to get
a hit and has had some balls hit his way that Cal Ripken couldnt
make a play on. A strange swirl to the first 20 games of the 2014
season. I wonder how long it can go this way before "some changes"
are made or created. Lloyd Mac is who you want at mgr. After that
I hope no team runs up a 12 games ahead lead going into the
All-Star break from the AL West. Oakland 12 games up at the
All-Star break is something I cant see the M's jelling to the point
to where they go on a second half tear and overcome.
So can the M's beat Houston Wednesday afternoon to salvage a
game this homestand. I'll be watching it.

SEATTLE (AP) Erasmo Ramirez couldnt come up with the big pitch when he needed it.

Twice in the early innings Tuesday night he had an 0-2 count on a batter before giving up a home run.

Those pitches were enough to do in the Seattle Mariners in a 5-2 loss to the Houston Astros, extending Seattles losing streak to eight games.

Ramirez (1-3) didnt pitch badly overall, striking out eight over six innings and only allowing three hits. Two of those, however, were the home runs that gave the Astros a 3-0 lead after two innings.

He did not make quality strikes when he needed to, Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. Particularly ahead in the count two strikes, and it cost him tonight.

Three batters into the game, Houstons Jason Castro just cleared the left field wall for a two-run homer, his fourth. Chris Carter followed in the second inning with a shot to left that landed in the second deck for his first homer of the year.

That is something I have to work on, Ramirez said. Try to make a better pitch in that situation, because it was hard to get to 0-2.

Seattles Dustin Ackley tried to counter with his own deep ball to left in the bottom of the second, but Matt Dominguez made a leaping catch at the wall to end the inning.

The Mariners offense did little to help Ramirez out. Houston starter Collin McHugh, making his season debut after being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City, struck out a career-high 12 and didnt walk a batter, giving up three hits in 6 2-3 shutout innings for his first win in 10 career starts.

He was a little different than the scouting report we got. He was 94 (miles an hour) with a pretty good cut slider, Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. He threw exceptionally well tonight.

The Mariners only got one man to second against McHugh. Once he left with two outs in the seventh inning, Justin Smoak provided Seattles only offense of the day with a two-run homer off reliever Raul Valdes.

That was a rare bright spot for the Mariners, who struck out 14 times, equaling their season high set Monday.

We just have to do better as a whole, show what we are capable of doing, Smoak said.

Houstons Matt Dominguez homered in the top of the seventh against Seattle reliever Dominic Leone. The Astros got an insurance run in the eighth off Danny Farquar. The Astros loaded the bases with three singles and then Carter singled to drive in the run.

Josh Fields pitched the ninth for his second save. The Astros have won six straight against the Mariners.

Ramirez said he felt confident in his pitches early on, despite the two mistakes. He got stronger as the game went on, retiring the last nine batters he faced.

I tried to use every pitch I got and whatever control, just throw it, Ramirez said.

Ramirez won his first start of the season. In the four starts since, Ramirez has three losses and a no-decision when he gave up five runs and didnt make it out of the third inning.

The fact is, when the club is struggling you have to go out and throw strikes and put up zeros, and he didnt do that early, McClendon said.

NOTES: The crowd of 10,466 was the fifth-lowest in Safeco Field history. Six of the seven lowest crowds at Safeco have been matchups with the Astros, all coming since the start of last season. Seattle RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) was scheduled to pitch in a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Tacoma, but instead threw a simulated game at Safeco Field on Tuesday afternoon due to weather concerns. McClendon said the outing went well, and Iwakuma will have a rehab outing with Tacoma on Sunday. Astros RHP Lucas Harrell, designated for assignment on April 16, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

No better reason to follow that post with the M's did win Wednesday's
afternoon delight game with Houston and Kyle Seager drove in all 5-runs
with 2 hrs. He was hitting .154 when the game began and he has signaled
that maybe he has found his touch. The whole club is in a slump as nobody
can start the fireworks that these M's have within them but this Kyle Seager
explosion can go a long ways with a few others get the good ship Mariner
getting more wins. I heard a radio interview with Lloyd Mac and he's prepared
to give this group atleast 150-200ab's before making any changes which is
a pretty fair shake I'd say. I'd sure like to see how the M's respond to Mars
going direct May 20 and beyond. The M's could get it together June
onwards but then we have the 2nd MIR period of 2014 that runs from
June 7th to July 1th. Have no idea how that will turn out until we get
closer. Still think this M's team is capable of getting hot but need to see
some real exhibitions of it...sock it to me baby

Where's the rest of the 'team' been lately? Oooops... They've been on the road, where you're s'posed ta lose anyway. But...they come home ta shitty weather, an empty stadium, and they perform? Something's wrong here, and IF they can't get whatever's missing back, a repeat of the last five years ensures Safeco Field will remain empty!

And the post season... A pipe dream.

Maybe a little bragging could help? And here's just the thing... Well it may be a long shot, but what the hell, if ya make a million plus per season, why not? Ya can autograph it then flog it and maybe some rabid fan will come up with a couple hundre...or not!

But you can still brag, even if ya don't go ta the post-season!

$14,100 for a baseball glove?

Willie Mays never wore Hermès

By Charles Passy, MarketWatch

The pitch:

Looking to make a fashion statement on the baseball diamond? Hermès, the French brand best known for its silk scarves and ties, says it has just the item: a baseball glove , newly available this spring, thats intended to take your game to a whole other level at least pricewise. Yes, it runs $14,100, which is more than the cost of a pair of season tickets to the New York Yankees (and were not talking seats in the nosebleed section, either). But Hermès executives promise that the glove is worth every penny and not just as a conversation piece. Its made to be used, says Robert Chavez, U.S. chief executive for Hermès.

What makes the glove so expensive? Begin with the absolutely top-grade, France-sourced leather, Chavez explains. (Hermès refers to it as gold swift calfskin leather, though theres no actual gold involved.) Then factor in the hand-stitching and construction. It takes 25 hours for one person to make this glove, Chavez adds. Plus, theres the Hermès name, which carries a certain cachet. In fact, when the brand last offered a baseball glove to tie in with the opening of its New York mens store it sold out of the limited-edition product fairly quickly. We didnt realize there were such aficionados out there, says Chavez, adding that theres no such supply limitation this time around.

The reality:

What does a baseball professional an 11-time Gold Glove winner, say think of a $14,100 glove? Thats ridiculous, says Keith Hernandez, the former New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals first baseman whos now a baseball analyst for the SNY sports network.

Indeed, Hernandez is far from alone in saying its hard to justify a glove with a five-digit (or even a four-digit) price tag. Ballplayers and sports-equipment retailers alike say quality gloves from such trusted brands as Rawlings (look for its Pro Preferred Series, experts say) and Wilson (go for its A2K Series) can be had for as little as $200. And Sports Authority, one of the nations leading retailers of sports equipment, carries just five gloves online priced at $500; most of its 200-plus other gloves are well below that mark.

Some other particulars to keep in mind if youre shopping for a new mitt for yourself or your budding big leaguer: Remember that gloves are tailored to a position that is, a catchers or first basemans glove is different from an outfielders glove, which itself is likely to be larger than an infielders mitt. And rigidity can be a good thing: You can break in a glove over time, but you dont want any pliability in the beginning, says Hernandez, since a stiff glove is one that will generally last longer. Youll get more bang for your buck, he says. (That said, most ballplayers have endorsement deals with equipment manufacturers and get their own gloves for free.) Finally, the quality of the leather matters. Elite models are generally made from the top 5% of steer hides for ideal break-in, durability and performance, says Mark Marney, chief executive of online retailer Baseball Express .

The cheaper models on the market notwithstanding, the Hermès folks stand by their $14,100 glove so much so that theyre expanding their baseball line to include a $1,925 bat thats made from ash and covered partly in the same leather thats used for the glove. But what about an actual baseball to complete the set? That will probably be the next item, says Hermèss Robert Chavez.

After an 8 game losing streak...two wins? Yep!

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2014_04_25_texmlb_seamlb_1&mode=recap_home&c_id=sea

Perhaps the manager reminded 'em that their pay depends on pleasing the fans first, then the front office, or something... At least they seemed like they got the message! If only temporarily.

Keep your fingers crossed Ms fans, it's early and anything can happen, and it probably will!

I had to mix in the rain-delayed NASCAR Nationwide race at Richmond
with the M's game tonight. Watched mostly the race with M's updates
at commercial breaks. Kevin Harvick got it done ahead of the next
phenom in racing Chase Elliott. M's errupt with 4-runs in the bottom
of the 8th inning and lead Texas 6-3. Enter Fernando Rodney. This
is one interesting pitcher. I've watched his career from Seattle and
now he's in Seattle. He has his own way of pitching and his demeanor
around the mound and the crooked hat thing. He' s got something
that he always points to the sky and does numerous different
gestures toward the sky as if he is getting some inspiration to
throw the next pitch for a strike. Well he's got something going
with the divine powers thing as he walked in two runs with the
bases loaded and then Justin Smoak caught a line-drive on a
spectacular catch and made it back to first for a double-play
to win the game. How Fernando Rodney got a save this game
means this guy has something working for him. He's well paid
and comes through...hope that lasts all season.

I mentioned Kyle Seager hitting .154 a week ago against Houston,
and everybody says Kyle is going to turn it around and be the .290
hitter with 20-25hrs and play extraordinary 3rd base. Well Kyle "lit-it-up"
against Texas at Safeco with two games with two homers and the
M's wins. The M's have some sleeping giants on the roster ready
to wake-up like Kyle Seager. Some Astro-info on Kyle Seager...
Born Nov 3 1987...Scorpio Sun conjunct Pluto and that wont
go away. Looked at his transits for the last few days and a transiting
North Node making a conjunction to Kyles natal Mercury. I would
describe that as a moment of clarity and man did Kyle "do something"
with that clarity.

So now the M's fly to NYC with a series with the Yinkees starting
Tuesday night. Going to be some ex-Mariner/ex Yankee emotion
going on with Robinson Cano first trip back to Yankee Stadium
and Ichiro wearing Yankee pinspripes for a couple years now.
The M's usually play pretty good at Yankee Stadium and dont seem
afraid of the place. M's luck-out and dont have to face the Japanese
phenom pitcher that pitched against the Angels Sunday night.

With all the money they forked out to make a new Yankee Stadium
they forgot the closeable roof. The Mariners play all their games in
the rain "on the road". The rain and how hard that rain was at times
was hard to believe that they still played the game the whole 9-innings.
Both clubs knew the weather forecast and it was going to be playing
baseball in the rain. Playing baseball in the rain is contradictory. When
its raining hard, play is suspended usually. The rain that was falling the
last half of the M's game at NY should have been enough to call the
game on account of rain. The only reason this game ran to its conclusion
is "double-headers" are a bitch.

M's go 2 for 2 in New York and then fly to Houston for tonites game
against the Astros. M's radio announcer said they got into Houston
about 3am and it was after 4am before anybody got to bed. This
is a crazy road trip with a 3300mile flight to NY, then a 1800mile flight
to Houston, then a 2000mile flight to Oakland, then a 800mile flight
back to Seattle. A road trip in all three time zones. M's seem to have
trouble with these Astros since they joined the American League.
Lost the series opener in 11-12 innings. Day game on Saturday
so nobody gets much rest. Get to see Hishashi Iwakuma make
his first start in 2014. If he's good on this start watch-out...the
"Double Aries" pitchers King Felix and Iwakuma could be a strong
1-2 punch. King Felix pitched tonite against the Astros and had
a chance to win the game but the Seattle bullpen couldnt hold
down the Astros in extras.

OK Troll..I think I know this Mariner club better. Got pretty scary there with
that 8-game losing streak...like is this dejavu again but this M's team has
some warriors for a better term and theyve fought on and went 7-2 on
a "bonus miles" roadtrip to NY, won both games as one got rained out,
flew to Houston and took 2 out of 3 there, then flew to Oakland to take
3 of 4 games there. Interesting if the M's could have pulled out that 2nd
game of the double-header, they would have the AL West lead but just
couldnt get many hits. Thats OK. No rest as its Thursday nite at Safeco
with 4-games against the KC Royals. The M's need to start getting it
done at home. Think this homestand with the Royals and Rays will
be a test for the M's to try to steal home. So far most visiting clubs
seem to play better than the M's. So what happens "this" homestand
I will watch and see and hopefully will be please with M's play. Still
another couple weeks of Mars Retrograde to go so you hope to not
have any more injuries. I like the M's to be right in it as this club seems
to have the components. I have to say I love Lloyd Mac. This man
is just so perfect (Capricorn) as a manager. Sort of Dusty Baker and
Frank Robinson to me. You know a Capricorn manager that has made
it to this point is going to be "your leader/teacher". All the Mariners are
doing much better lately except for Brad Miller whos been everyday
shortstop but hitting under the Mendoza Line. Just my feeling that
Nick Franklin needs some time at shortstop as this guy is "ready
in the wings" to get into the M's lineup. So at this time of the season
so far the AL West is "up for grabs" and the M's are right there.

OK its "gametime" for all MLB clubs as the Mars Retrograde is over May 19th.
What a brutal time as the injuries to players seem to happen daily. Seems
maybe 50 pitchers need to undergo Tommy John surgery or something
like that. I know there are a whole bunch of players that got injured in
MLB since the first of March until today. Well most are getting close to
coming back for the Mariners except for Cory Hart who pulled a hammy
Sunday. The Mariners have been missing James Paxton their P3 for the
last month. He's coming back soon. Tywan Walker is just about there.
Iwakuma is back in a big way after missing March-April as he pitched
a couple 8-inning shutout games in a row. M's pitching is going to be
very strong the rest of the season. King Felix did pretty good for having
to pitch with the flu on 2-starts. Actually the crud made the rounds
through the M's dugout on that last trip to NY and well after. So I
think that has passed thankfully as Felix pitched real well last start
against the Twins. So now that Mars is going the right way how will
the M's respond? I cant tell you for atleast a week or two because
I havent "seen it" yet. M's everyday SS Brad Miller needs to get it
going as he's nearing the 50-game mark hitting .154. The M's have
many SS's ready in Tacoma that are hitting .350 so I think Brad
Miller needs some 3 for 4 or 4 for 5 days at the plate starting now.
The whole club could be hitting better and we'll see what happens
come June 1th. Robinson Cano just keeps putting numbers in the
softest most casual way. He really is a special player..has an even keel.
Cano seems pretty happy in Seattle and I think this team is going
to be good to real good the rest of the way.

If you dont know much about King Felix by now you are missing out
on one of the greatest as his career just keeps adding great pitching
performances one after another. Most out there would think the
Houston Astros coming to town will mean an easy time of things
well not so. The Astros have proven to be a thorn in the side for
the M's since they've been in the AL. Well King Felix was going to
be the one "throwing thorns" at the Astro batters. Think I've watched
every game Felix has pitched as a Mariner. Tonight you saw why
everybody loves King Felix. 9 K's in 8-innings, 1 earned run.
King Felix has had many days like this and thats why the
Mariner fans hold "Kings Court" today. A section of the grandstands
out past the leftfield foulpole and they all have yellow t-shirts and
large "cards" with the letter "K" and all rooting for King Felix on
every pitch. Well actually the noise really gets noticable when
when the batter has 2-strikes and you hear this building chant
coming louder..K.K.K.K.K.K. King Felix pitched great tonight.
I still cant think of a pitcher today that captivate the crowd
when pitching like Felix can.
