Milwaukee Road train 201 exits Sixteen Mile Canyon and crosses the BN and Missouri River on its journey west.

June 2014 Lombard, MT.

Where Sixteen Mile Creek flowed into the Missouri River the Milwaukee Road crossed the Northern Pacific Railroad and "The Big Muddy" on an impressive curving girder bridge. Once an important interchange point between the two railroads, by the 1950s the area had begun to lose its importance. In 1980 the Milwaukee Road abandoned their "Lines West" and the big bridge at Lombard, MT sat unused. Today, Montana Rail Link and BNSF trains use the former NP tracks while the Milwaukee bridge has had its eastern end removed, allowing no travel over the structure.

Huson, Montana is located 20 miles west of Missoula and was a major crossing of the Milwaukee Road and Northern Pacific Railroad. John W. Barriger III was traveling west on the Milwaukee in 1936 when he snapped the B&W photo of the railroad diamond, farm house, barn and various out buildings. Forward 77 years and the farm house and buildings have outlived the Milwaukee Road, the Northern Pacific and the railroad diamond. The Milwaukee was gone in 1980; the diamond removed shortly thereafter, the NP is now Montana Rail Link.
