Switchpersons nightmare...riding a flatcar

Looking back at pictures I took in the early 1970's at

Bellingham and I got some interesting pics of switchmen

riding point on a flatcar. You got to be an acrobat to

to get aboard a moving flatcar with nothing more than

"one hand grip and a stirrup step". One of pics has the

switchman hanging onto the brakewheel with one hand

and the other is hanging onto the only other grip.

Amazing. The other picture has a switchman riding a

long flatcar with no grips at all..just a foot-stirrup for

what good that is and somehow he figured a way to

"get aboard" this flatcar but I think he will eventually

"dismount with a jump".

in the first pic he guy just jumped up there because whoever the idiot was who worked on that car last put a smaller diameter wheel set in the front truck. This allows the end of the car to sit lower so you can get on easier.

The second car ya just walk down the middle of the tracks to the car, reach up to grab the handbrake wheel and step on the cut lever close to the coupler. The guy is sitting over the edge so he can jump outta the way when that gravel which is over the rail in places derails the car
