Another 'mishap' for slAmtrak. Poor guys, and gals! With schitt like this, job security can't be considered as a plus!

An interview with a young man with big hair that lives nearby and is out boating
under this bridge sez he knows all the sounds the bridge makes when it unlocks/locks
and he detected a different sound/s when the bridge locked up for AMTK. AMTK must
have had a clear signal to be going any speed at all. Signal yellow still means the bridge
is locked and good for crossing. So looking at the AMTK loco on its side and a few cars
and so close to the south end of the bridge it had to hit the "derails" in "derail position".
Also the young man said he saw the bridgetender trackside waving and yelling like hell
hoping to stop the train and the bridgetender dove off the bridge into the bay below figuring
on the worst thing that could happen. This accident under the Mars oppose Pluto celestial
influences and its a news maker. I always had that fear that I might have to jump into the
ice cold Snohomish River one night when I was a bridge tender but lucky for me I never had
to. So I'm awaiting the report from the bridgetender on duty Sunday and what the fuck
happened. I know from experience any train approaching a drawspan/lift bridge that has
red signal the train needs to be talked by and at 10mph max. This AMTK had to have favorable
signals to be at a speed to derail. So what did the bridgetender notice to the point of being
trackside hoping to wave off a disaster before jumping into the bay. Just know this accident
happened on a stretch of joint BNSF/UP track just south of Tacoma that runs 60-70 trains
a day and no detour. Watched the 10pm news and no effort yet to re-rail AMTK. Think
freights can use the main track with no derailed passenger train on it. Big news story and
a huge disruption to railroad traffic.

If you red the article, and perused the photos... the train was in 'shove' mode heading north though Steilacoom. A shitty stretch of BNSF real estate on a good day! Hot, dry conditions of late... The ROW is in serious need of attention. NOT a locomotive pulling the Cascade Train. Nope. It's being s over 60 MPH. A dangerous trip!

One photo actually looks directly south, the rails appear out of alignment... Don't know what your bridge tender bud knows, but a 50-60 MPH train headed at your bridge (an old bridge at that) might put ya in the drink too!

Throwing the plant into an ALL STOP condition after the train passed the Distant Signal would require the use of hand signals as a last ditch attempt to warn the train, but as noted, a last ditch attempt, cause before that youd be on the MOTOROLA two way radio. Maybe he ran out of the office without his portable radio, or didnt he have one? As this guy jumped into the water was he waving a standard railroad stop signal, or was he doing a Red Skeleton Gertrude and Heathcliffe arm flap?

Seems like there was some railroad protocol missing here....corse we dont get ta see the whole picture, much less an accurate one painted by an unenlightened press.

So, it was in shove mode backing up through the split switch derailer....... (?)

Don't think that the train was "shoving" had anything to do with it. The AMTK crews
ride in the "dummy" all the time as its a "switch-ends" train. So after watching numerous
local TV news updates on the derailment nothing new to what caused it. Calvin mentioned
some sort of radio contact to the 50mph AMTK from the bridgetender and I wondered that
too. The bridge I worked at dint have a portable radio assigned. So if I'm out to the outhouse
or doing anything outside my office I'm "radio-less". And anytime I would be out of my office
would be a "calculated chance" that no one would need me for 5-minutes. So the AMTK train
is doing all of 50mph according to the passengers on board before the train applied heavy brakes
and derailed would seem to indicate the AMTK train had the "green light" over this bridge but
it derails at the "derail" protecting the south end of the bridge. So as a bridgetender you cant
change the direction of the derails with the signals set. If you drop the signal the derails go into
time 5 minutes. Also no way "bridge derails" can change position on their own due to any
possible malfunction. I'm trying to figure this one out as it could of been me out there.
What did the bridgetender see to begin waving and yelling at AMTK. This is quite a story going.

P.S. Uke...AMTK 467 is a "puller" and not a "shover".

Yeah, the pictures kind of tell that story.

Yeah, the 467 IS a locomotive pulling that Cascades train on this trip. In fact, while working at Interbay, my 'drop pit' crew installed rebuilt motors/wheelsets under 467. Easy work since the unit is an EMD.

So on tonights 10PM Fox local news has an update on the AMTK 467 derailment at
West Tacoma a few days back and now its the AMTK engineers fault for "speeding"
for one charge. I thought it was a 50mph zone over the bridge but its actually a 40mph
zone. The AMTK northbound was running over the speed limit miles before approaching
the bridge and I said there was "no way a derail could change position with the signal set"
but something new has been added to the derail system to this bridge. If a train is speeding
to the approach of this derail to this bridge it will go to derail position. First I ever heard of
that technology. No sure how much over the speed limit the system is "calabrated " for.
Whatever the "limits" were it was enough to spring the derails in front of AMTK. So still missing
in the news is if there was problems with the bridge as that young man with huge hair still
kinda thinks so but that's sort of moot now as AMTK never made it to the bridge. Confirmed
the bridgetender did leap into the bay below but is going to live.

Sounds like a runaway circuit.

Snippy will let Calhoun Bing! Map his way around looking for the rail equivalent of a mountain nearby.

The Slide, Track 1 between AR and Bennington Curve, has timer ckts that drop the signals to stop and blows a horn to alert the hawg of a speeding train.

I've heard about The Slide, we had a guy who was from the area but ended up in Hoosierland, he's the first guy who ever told me about The Slide.

I looked, but couldn't find, a picture I recall seeing of a Green Team failure on Saluda, where the runaway track did what runaway tracks do.
