The Russian 2TE-10M diesel locomotive
Permalink

YouTube has a lot of video of daily freight action of the Russian Railway and for sure one locomotive type

stands out as the "Great Air Polluter"...the 2TE-10M in all green. According to Wikipedia they/Russia made

close to 10,000 of them and are rated at 2740HP. They are not a clean burning diesel as maybe half the

amount built smoke like a volcano and have fire shooting up from the exhaust. Russia Railways covers

thousands of miles where the population is zero and no matter how much smoke a locomotive emits is

not going to hurt anything. Russia seems ripe for a gigantic GE or EMD locomotives Tier 4 air compliant deal.

I could find a dozen examples of how bad the 2TE-10M fills the sky with huge smoke with ease.  The poster

of these videos like to spell everything in Russian so it makes it hard to know exactly what it is until you

watch the video.

TW5k is no diesel doc but there might be an issue with combustion air on those babies.

Turbo Lag complicated by non existing seals on the lifters, allowing raw fuel into the exhaust manifold and thusly a fiery corona like appearance.

Seems nobody here has ever seen an Alco T-6 in action?

Couldn't find this one last night but the start-up of a 2TE-10M is really dramatic. When I first
watched this video I was going "whats that noise that sounds like a lawn mower" not associating
it with the start-up of this locomotive but it is. Then after a minute of that the unit starts up and
notice the person taking the video keeps pointing up to roof/stacks and back down and back up
like not really sure what to expect or knew many of the possible outcomes of this locomotive starting-up.
Another thing with this engine is has "smoke tube" emitting blue smoke near the fuel tank/ground level
so anybody trackside gets it in your face. This is the most polluting unit I've seen.

I'm not an 'expert' in locomotive technology, but I'll opine on these 2TE-10M units anyway. The engines under the hood is an opposed piston 2-stroke, naturally aspirated diesel. Although at the time they were outshopped these units were considered state of the art in diesel engine technology.

At the time your videos were made, the units were forty years old, or older. And they were by US rail standards, worn out. Also of note, they were NOT regularly maintained on/in a scheduled basis. Hence they 'smoke' under the best of circumstances, and under loading conditions.

At the point when the videographer filmed these locomotives, they were virtually junk, and totally obsolete.

Russian Railways has gradually fazed these units out, and replaced by newer units, with 'better' engines and controls.

Possibly. But I only got peek (photo) at two engines under the hood, and couldn't determine their heritage, or lineage. F-M opposed piston engines were/are some of the best type OPs ever built. In fact Fairtbanks-Morse OP engines are still being built, remanufactured, and continue in service. Parts for the OPs are also available.

If that doesn't prove their reliability, and great service records, I don't know what will. The F-Ms were originally developed (in the US) for submarine service in WW-II. The first ones were UN-turbocharged, and were aspirated by a Roots-type blower. Later model engines have adapted to turbocharging.

These engines were/are very fuel efficient, and their power output was more than expected, plus they made very good use of every pound of diesel fuel. And they were not smokers, even cold started.

I'm not sure but I believe the US Coast Guard still has the OPs installed as built on/in some of its lighter boats.

The PWV FMs around here would pull the rail up tu them if they couldnt move the train. According tu Red Team pros. They left while Snippy was still on Team Green.

Harry Dean Stanton pops the upper crankcase covers... Early US Navy subs ran on battery power ONLY, while submerged. They hadda come up to snorkel depths ta recharge off the diesel generators. Nukes changed all that.

I had an apprentice way back who had been a submariner on diesel boats... He loved the 38D-1/8s, and thought EMDs were half as good as F-Ms!

A friend of mine, post ww2, said that recharging while snorkeling was a problem
in rough weather. A big wave would shut down the snorkel intake, causing a bad
vacuum situation. Ears popped and medical probs followed. wes out.

I'm not one to relish underwater work no matter what! Clausterphobia don'tcha know. So fuck that shit! Rob (my submariner pal) said on one period at sea, his boat (that's what all of 'em called their subs) didn't surface for 79 days! Seventy-nine days/nights submerged... Can you imagine what that must've been like? I can't. But ALL submariners volunteer for that duty. They're as crazy as shithouse rats!

But back to topic, Russian diesel locomotives of the 2-stroke variety, the 2TE-10M. The engines themselves were/are built by a Ukrainian outfit, who may have copied early F-M designs. While good intented back then, ya gotta maintain what ya borrow.

Simple things really, that we learned as we progressed through. Air filters. Fuel supply. Injection timing. Replacing bad/leaking injectors. But it's mostly common sense really. Clean air, good quality fuel oil, injectors.

In the Russian Railways today they announced the "Most powerful Cargo Locomotive" which is electric
and rated at 11,000HP for the 2-locomotive set on B-B trucks. So 5500HP per locomotive or in diesel
world this is maybe the most powerful "Geep/GP" units ever built.
