The Canadian Pacific Transcon Vancouver BC to Montreal goes through Revelstoke BC. Revelstoke a huge CP railroad town and

division point and crew change point. Notice watching the webcam today that they get their crew change done in 3-5 minutes

as its blocking a few crossings in town. Think trains allowed to block a crossing for 5 minutes before complaining but they beat that.

Of course once the train starts moving there maybe another 80 cars to pass by. I made a solo railfan journey in the early 80's

following the CP from Vancouver to Revelstoke and spent the night there. My lodging I thought was far enough from the tracks

but I was wrong as the whole town is nothing but railroad sounds all night. The sounds of huge lashups of SD40-2's pulsating

between the mountains accelerating east or west. This is the CP action that made them one of my favorite railroads and the

creative motive power distribution that only CP does. More later.

I spent another night in Revelstoke during my "video tour" of 1993 of the CP/CN Fraser River Canyon
all the way to Revelstoke. The CP going way back to very primitive uses of "RCC cars" next to midtrain
locomotives early 70's. This route is filled with nothing but long heavy coal/grain/potash/Sulphur trains
all about 150 cars and super heavy. The CN route to Vancouver BC is almost flat and 1-2 units all that
is needed. The CP route has all kinds of ups and downs and the need for midtrain locomotives getting
across the Rockies and Selkirks and the rest of the way through the Fraser River Canyon. CP had a huge
fleet of SD40-2's that was the staple power for 20 years but now its the big GE 4400hp that dominate and
all in the "New CP Red" paint scheme. Never liked it but that's my problem. The CP today always trying
new ways to "distribute power" in a monster train. Back in 1993 I shot video of a CP loaded coal train with
the distribution of power 1+1+1+1+1 for a 150 car train. So every 30 cars was a unit. CP still trying different
power stagger to this day. It will be fun to go to Revelstoke BC with just a click of a mouse and not have
to stay the night.
