Long hard road to restoration from static display to running condition. By April and May she'll be operating, so they say, under her own power. Steam. Oil fired steam at that. Most of these later units were converted from coal to oil back in the late '50s, and '60s. The 4014 will generate steam by burning oil.

More info:https://www.up.com/heritage/steam/schedule/index.htm Hoping to drive over to the "Equality State" again. Maybe catch up with our friend EphphEmmBee... Of course that's a huge gamble t best!

If you go, stay away from Greybull. The locals claim, most of them anyway, that the entire clan are lowlifes, thieves, rabble, and pickpockets. The local sheriff saved our pal before a mob strung him up, after he was accused of 'fondling' a woman in a local watering hole downtown. Draw your own conclusion...

The desktop controls on Big Boy will be interesting.

"Snippy" might be old because he still has a calendar from the Centennial celebration of the Transcontinental Railroad's completion.

I wonder if Al Krug is still alive and out that way?

Al Krug. I remember him, I even traded a couple of communications with him way back when. He cut his losses and bailed from PC/CR in Cy's native state and headed on out west. Didn't Mr. FMB tell us he knew of him but never met him?

I met another guy once who cut his losses from PC/CR and headed south and hired out with the Green Team.

Al Krug is to railroading what Juan Browne is to YouTube aviation and my favorite part of Californication. Al never really had YouTube. Juan does. He's pretty damned good.

Since Pipes posted his update on the Prime Air 767 down in the bayou by somebody we know, I've been checking blancolirio for crash updates.

Al Krug....

How do you guys know him?

That is SO crazy! I met Al back in the early 90's on Compuserve and I bugged him to no end with railroad questions.....We became pretty good friends via email...

I lost contact with him in the mid 2000's then got back in touch in 2011. He had retired and had brain surgery but was AOK...Cant seem to find his email address.

What a small fucking world!

I worked with him for 3 years in the early 80's at Sheridan, Wy.  even worked the same cab (I was working as a fireman at the time) with him... excellent engineer, built his own pacesetter for loading coal at the mines...

Building your own pacemaker would probably get you fired today, pick a reason, altering company equipment from its intended use.

We had a engineer who built a device that he mounted to the console with a big magnet that would hit the crew call wire so that he wouldn't have to do it. Finally, one day, the wrong people found out about it and (at least kindly) told him to quit using it. Word always gets out sooner or later. I'd bet it's worse today.

"Snippy" used a clock with a notched disk JBWelded tu a Magnet. It wasn't nearly as successful as "Butt-Fucking the Crewcall". This involved getting a large paperclip out of one of the 110 million conductor's packets on the engine (if you could stand to spend three seconds in the putrid pisser in the nose). Then, you opened up the electrical cabinet right next to the engineer's long-hood control stand. Find the correct Amphenol connector and short the "B-F" pins with the paper clip. AMF, you horrid fucking Crewcall POS.

Others, including "Snippy", also used the red shit bag wire ties chained together to hook to the horn handle. It looked like the Girl Scouts had daisy chained the Crewcall to the Horn.

You would have to experience the skull-cracking lifestyle of 12 hours a day working with the ear piercing Crewcall that went off every 50 seconds no matter what you were doing, coupled to long-hooding, coupled to a Nathan P-5 SkullFucker, coupled with open windows and doors, coupled with the cab at 120 degrees because of dual control stands where someone has left the stand lights on for the last five days making them 130 degrees --- all while being continuously exposed to horrendous putrid piss wind being blown up through the control stand because the years of piss saturating the nose of the engine had eaten through the traction motor cooling duct pressurizing the nose enough to blow it in your lap every minute of every trip. Plus, the complete aggravation of using Red Team locomotives where the stupid cheap-ass no-railroading locomotive buyers didn't buy extended range dynamic brakes and the Johnny-cum-latelys were all about random tape pulling to examine your use of dynamic brakes.

Hell no, I ain't forgetting!

Oh, whaa, whaa, whaa, such a baby, the only good thing on those green team pieces of shit were the extended dynamic brakes. And I phukking hated, HATED, HATED running from the left side, sitting in front of that phukking door in the wintertime, having to look back to see the speedometer, PHUKK, I hated that. The only bad piss ones I remember were those phukking GE's, when they were the JUNK of the manufacturers. And what was up with the ride on those GAWDAWFUL 3900's, those phukkers would beat you to death. As for the random tape pulling, I blame those Green Team asswipes for a lot of that, things got a lot worse after 6/1/82.

Snippy is a proud Green Teamer who got switched to the other team and, in fact, defended to his very best abilities folks including alums of that same Red Team, and forever has to live with it. Cy has great respect for that but PHUKK the Green Team.
