Incredible as it seems, otherwise 'intelligent' people feel so threatened by science, and undeniable scientific proofs at most levels, that they choose to turn away, hide their eyes, plug their ears, and dare not speak openly of accepting truth over authoritarianism, lest they be ejected from the protection of the enclave.

Not so whacky really. When it's a matter of life and death. Or spiritual (metaphorical) death in most enclaves, of religious, or religion-like cults are protected by authoritarian leaders like a Hitler, Manson, Jones, and many, many others...
