HORNELL, N.Y. (WENY) Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D NY) is urging Norfolk Southern to make adjustments for trains running through Hornell to prevent prolonged stops at the crossing between East Avenue and Henry Street.

 

Sen. Schumer said members of the community have brought the issue to his attention on numerous occasions. Residents have expressed concerns that idling trains obstruct traffic and school bus routes, as well as critical emergency services as vehicles are forced to be rerouted around the perimeter of the city.

 

Idling trains in the south end of Hornell are leaving residents and businesses stranded and endangered by cutting off direct access to the rest of the community, and worse, emergency services, said Senator Schumer. Im calling on Norfolk Southern to work with the city to relocate their trains and restore safety and peace of mind to Hornell immediately.

"DeGraff said after the pandemic, the company is extremely busy. With so many people ordering things, they are shipping more than usual, resulting in more and longer trains."

 

What it really means, 

"We have consolidated multiple trains in order to maximize horse power per tonnage.  These super trains also perform block swapping and the turn work of jobs that were eliminated in order to cut cost and lower the OR.  We appreciate the sacrifice your community has made for our shareholders."
