Flooding on the BNSF Sumas Sub
Permalink

Today another video posted of the flood damage at Sumas Wa. Instead of the 6-cars derailed in earlier reports looks more like 20.

Derailed by raging flood waters just sitting in the yard. It may be a while before BNSF crews can get to Sumas. Have no idea

how the line faired from Sedro Woolley to Sumas but suspect some damaged spots to get to Sumas. The derailed cars in the flood

likely to stay that way for months. Most of the cars derailed to be interchanged with CP and SRY which are in the same boat or no boat.

CP line from Abbotsford to Sumas underwater or was. SRY has to have some problems too. Vital traffic is grain for Lynden which is

dairy farm central. BN/BNSF has talked about selling the Sumas Sub years ago. Sure BNSF a little hesitant about repairing this line

but its the right thing to do.

Water receded in downtown Sumas and BNSF crews are working at it trying to re-build the long but not wide
Sumas yard. Wondering why no BNSF locomotives in the flood. The EVESUM (Everett-Sumas) just leaves power
and train at Sumas and takes a cab back to Everett. Maybe the EVESUM crew advised dispatcher it was starting
to flood and permission return power to Everett. No BNSF radio chatter about work trains heading for the Sumas Sub.
Must be places to fix/repair before a work train could make it to Sumas. There is a lot of work to do at Sumas and
BNSF doing what can be done without the aid of the "big hook".

I heard a EVESUM calling North Branch Dispr to leave Delta Yard Wednesday afternoon. Usual intructions
to call a cab in 3hrs to pick them up at Morgan Road and bring back to Everett. Morgan Road like 2 miles
south of the flood devastation of Sumas proper. Good news trains can travel the Sumas Sub to Sumas.
Pretty sure traffic has built up the last week or so. Not sure of CP or SRY situation at Sumas/Huntingdon
if any interchange possible yet. I dint know the Sumas Sub was OK to Sumas but now I know. Lynden
needing those C6's of grain like right now. Garbage pickup also in need as Sumas area depends on railroad
to haul loaded containers southward to me. I saw on VR Grab Bag a 60 car loaded "rip-rap" train of side dumps
heading north thru Chehalis. Lots of fixing to do.

Thanks to "Trainmaster Bob" a little more in depth look at the flood damage to the BNSF Sumas Sub.
I do know these roads and places like the back of my hand.
