BNSF paid 2 Billion for MRL lease.

2 billion sure sounds like a lot but not for BNSF. Going to be interesting how the BNSF wants to run things. MRL doing a great job keeping all

the BNSF traffic moving through this tough strech of Montana. It looks this ex-NP/BN/MRL strech of track going to go through "labour uncertainty"

again. It all started when BN sold/leased this track to MRL and its coming around again...in reverse.

BNSF paid 2 Billion for MRL lease.

It's pretty curious....I wonder what they were forking over for track and haulage rights?

Krink, not sure what the end game is on this.

Early 2000's, BNSF sold/leased off a bunch of branch lines to scab outfits claiming they can service them better, etc. BNSF seemed like all they wanted to do was haul cars and not mess with pulls/spots.

Fast forward to today and now they are taking them all back.

They took back the line in Carlsbad, NM about 3 or 4 years ago. The branch out to Escondido, CA and Miramar, CA they also took back about 2 years ago. Now the MRL.

I'm sure that there are others they reclaimed but these are the ones I know of.

BNSF making up for the BN screw-ups. The BN regimes of the 80's tried their best to fuck with perfection.
Trying their damnest to get rid of the "guaranteed " work force by hook or crook. During this time the
"Winona Bridge Railway" came to be and not to be where BN lines west of East Winona WI had a new
name and an effort to break all the perks to agreed to by BN. Working for BN in the 1980's was unsettling
as they were trying to fire people.

The Krebbs years...it was like BN was being run by a Nazi commander. Say goodbye to old GN/NP/Q boys in charge
and the relaxed place to work. 1980 was the BN/Frisco merger and a bunch of Frisco brass pricks went right to the top.
"Mean ole Frisco" ways started.

But Darius Gaskins, who was BNs CEO at the time, insists the MRL deal was necessary. BN didnt need two parallel mains across Big Sky country, he explains, and due to high labor costs and union-management animosity the decision was made to favor the GN route and lease the NP to Montana Rail Link. It scratched a bunch of itches. It was a very successful deal, Gaskins says. It accomplished what we hoped it would accomplish.

Oops, sorry. Does this mean Krebs was the Kodachrome guy? Probably not.

I was working into Laurel MT at the time MRL took over.  It was hard to watch the heartache and chaos those BN employees went through during the transition. Those who could retire did, many chased their senority and relocated, and some just quit. There were also a few significant acts of sabotage taken against the new owners.

History is lost tu those who record their version. Trains Magazine is flavored by

Management. Rumours and innuendo I suppose, oh and as always, keep a

watchfull eye out for a quick stop that could snap the recorders neck.

Now as for the view from Labor, that seems to get overlooked.  Don't want

tu many factaroonies floating around out there.

Could there be another shortline contract shoved down Labors throat aka

Springfield Terminal?

Reading Trains magazine wont tell ya that. READER BEWARE
