Plenty of video of aftermath of this NS "wreck". NTSB says one train rear ended another train and a train going opposite direction hit the derailed mess.

PTC doesn't work under 18 MPH, I read elsewhere. I wonder, was it a case of just dozing off to suddenly become conscious at that "Holy PHUKK", moment?

PTC works at 18 or any speed. It just isn't used for restricting speed unless you are exceeding the max.

Update: there is a video on YouTube showing the NS unit being pulled out of the river. Not sure if lead
trucks still attached but this unit could be re-railed (once the new track is laid) and roll down the track
once again. More about the wreck...the train that rear ended the other train dint hit it that hard in fact
no derailed cars on the train that got hit but what derailed is the cars on the train doing the "re-ending"
as with evasive braking some cars derailed into the path of the train going opposite direction. For sure
more about how this happen will be told.

Well-known Top Secret: PTC doesn't prevent restricted speed collisions.

My theory is that it makes them more likely, but that's just Snippy.

Cy didn't know that because Cy was out of there before all of that stuff happened. Restricted speed is you stop short, it's yours, in a nutshell.

That's it in a nutshell. You hit it, you own it.

My PTC failed tonight. It threw up a fence for a signal, but the signal was indicating clear. I was told to put it in restricting mode for the next 5 miles. The "fence" is a red striped block showing where you are suppose to stop or the PTC will stop you...

It's only five miles, there were a couple of times we ran restricted speed for 28 miles and one miserable night in the fog, about 24 miles, one of the more miserable trips ever. Signals were down and we were following another guy also running restricted speed, still an indelible memory.

I was trying to explain to my wife how this can happen and what restricted speed means. There's a couple other ways you can get yourself fired if you're not paying attention.

I note that when PTC throws up a red fence, it doesn't just throw a penalty....you can't recover from it like an alerter penalty...it stops the train, and then when you have talked to the PTC desk and the DS, you can then proceed at restricted speed. PTC really is stupid.

My problem is I forget to put it in restricting mode sometimes when I start to do set off's and pick ups. I don't mind the PTC, it chirps at me to do something before it goes into suppression.

I think PTC is great, especially the horn. I can't stand the Energy Management on it. Not only does it already run slow, but as soon as it senses an approach signal it starts slowing down and goes to manual at the approach at 20mph, now you have to throttle up for the next 4 miles. I f-ing hate it.

Energy Management...all that does is tell Trip Optimizer about the train and the power available...on CSX when TO sees an approach signal it abandons all thought of fuel conservation and speeds up to track speed....and then if you let it go as far it will before coming out of auto mode it will not slow down even a little bit. I have to kill it manually to get the train bunched up and prepared to stop.

Yeah, just like how it runs slow the whole trip until it starts downhill and then it somehow can't go until full dynamic.
