Back Side of Yosemite

If you ever go to Yosemite the way most people do, it's a closed glacial valley -- Yosemite Valley.

I always wondered what it would look like from the air from the back side looking west. Leaving Sacramento, I caught this, which answered the question.

It's kind of right above/behind the nacelle.

Did the captain come and tell everyone if you look to the right there's Yosemite? Or is that from the app? Or just pure knowledge.

LUV pilots don't talk much.

That's from the GPS working on the iPad that trip. I knew what I was looking for from the route and screenshots I took before leaving. I think that's about 100 miles, give or take.

It's funny, you can kind of do it using Google Maps, 3D and the tilt and pan now:

Nice part of the flights was staring out the windows at the back of my jet, enjoying a smoke back then, enjoying the purple mountains' majesties....

My GPS worked sometimes and sometimes it didn't. Couldn't figure out why. It was cool seeing how fast the dot was moving across the map.
I wonder if you could set it up so it knows where you're heading.

What you're saying, in essence, is you've boarded a flight to somewhere... yet you really have NO idea where that plane is headed? Why are you even on that flight?

Perhaps the crew at bj.com should take out a group insurance policy on your ass Pipes, in case you don't return from one of your 'flights'! Just sayin... 'Cause something ain't quite right here!

I find it hard sitting there not knowing where we are.  I don't the how the average person does it.

Apparently you Mr. Pipes are NOT the average person. Grab the app for your iPhone thingy like Snippy says, then you'll always know exactly where you are, in the air and on the ground! Good luck with that!

Avare app is pretty slick in the car, shows you airspeed, altitude, heading, and vertical speed. All that while your red plane follows along pre-downloaded sectional chart. If it works the same way in the air it will be like sitting in the jump seat.

Yep, my eldest sister and I hike a bit at Yosemite.... great memory for us.... Returning from S. California, we would fly low level through there.

Here's some screen shots of the Avare app everything worked perfectly, I even put in the way points flighaware.   The first pic is us following a (vector route?) into MIA and then we break off and land on runway 12.  If it wasn't for this thread is I'd have never thought to look it up, thanks cy.

Cool.

Does it have standard map layers, too?

Not a standard maps, but different types of aviation maps. The topographic and terrain maps don't look as busy. You have to pre down each other one for where you are going.
