A NEOCON gun nut......what are the odds of that?

Owen said Adkisson was apparently frustrated over being out of work and had a "stated hatred of the liberal movement."

Jim D. Adkisson, 58, has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church which killed two on July 27, 2008.

Police: Alleged Church Shooter Angry At Liberals

Suspect In Custody; 2 Killed In Shooting Spree

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (CBS) The police chief in Knoxville, Tennessee, says the man accused of a gun attack at a church that killed two people and seriously wounded five others apparently selected the congregation because of its liberal social stance.

Chief Sterling Owen said today that police found a letter in the car of Jim Adkisson, who was tackled and held by members of the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church after the Sunday morning attack.

Owen said Adkisson was apparently frustrated over being out of work and had a "stated hatred of the liberal movement."

The church is known for advocating women's and gay rights and founding an American Civil Liberties Union chapter.

Owen said the letter indicated Adkisson did not expect to leave the church alive and had 76 rounds of ammunition for his 12-guage semiautomatic shotgun.

Police have been joined by the FBI in investigating if this is a hate crime because of the church community's work on social issues. One neighbor reported that Adkisson had problems with Christianity.

More than 200 people were in attendance of a children's play when Adkisson walked in with a 12-guage shotgun and a bag full of ammunition and began firing.

"It was shock and you're trying to have it make sense in the context of where you're at - you're in church," said Jamie Parkey.

Church member Marty Murphy told The Knoxville News Sentinel that she was about 30 to 40 feet from the shooter when the rampage began.

She said church members dove under church pews and others ran out the sanctuary.

DALLAS (CBS) Dallas police say three young siblings riding in a car have been critically hurt in gunfire outside an apartment complex.

Police say the shooting victims - a 4-year-old girl, a 10-year-old boy and their 12-year-old sister - were in the back seat of the vehicle when it was fired upon early Wednesday.

The children were taken to a hospital by a relative.

Police said they are not sure if the shots were fired from another vehicle, reported CBS station KTVT-TV in Dallas.

Officials also said there was another shooting at the same complex about 90 minutes earlier. In that shooting, someone fired shots in the air to break up an argument between two women. One of them was grazed.

Police have not said if the two shootings are related.
