Man beaten by police near Phila. gets $1,001

PHILADELPHIA (AP) A man beaten in police custody after he dragged a policeman across a parking lot has been awarded $1,001 by a federal jury in Philadelphia.

The jury ordered Folcroft police officers William Wiseley and Anthony Lerro to pay Andrew Lamorgese $500 each in punitive damages. He got $1 in compensatory damages.

Lamorgese was 25 when he was beaten on Jan. 10, 2005. Records show he ignored a protection-from-abuse order and showed up at his girlfriend's workplace, hid in the bushes and jumped in her car.

When police showed up, Lamorgese refused to get out of the car. Lerro opened the car door and Lamorgese put the car in reverse and floored it. That knocked Lerro under the car door and dragged him across the parking lot.
