PHINALLY!!!

Phils 4, Rays 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) From losingest team to longest game, the Philadelphia Phillies are World Series champions.

Strange as that sounds.

Strange as it was.

Brad Lidge and the Phillies finished off the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 in a three-inning sprint Wednesday night to win a suspended Game 5 nearly 50 hours after it started.

Left in limbo by a two-day rainstorm, the Phillies seesawed to their first championship since 1980.

Pedro Feliz singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh and Lidge closed out his perfect season to deliver the title Philly craved for so long.

Bundled in parkas and blankets, fans returned in force to Citizens Bank Park and saw the city claim its first major sports championship in 25 years. No more references needed to the Phillies and their 10,000-plus losses.

It was among the most bizarre endings in baseball history, a best-of-seven series turned into a best-of-3 1/2 showdown when play resumed in the bottom of the sixth inning tied at 2.

Two Rays relievers warmed up to start, and there was a pinch-hitter before a single pitch. "God Bless America" was sung rather than the national anthem and the seventh-inning stretch came quickly.

Despite low TV ratings and minus the majors' most glamorous teams, fans will always remember how this one wrapped up. And for the first time in a long while, kids saw a World Series champion crowned before bedtime.

Jamie Moyer deserves something good. He's paid
his dues and now has a ring. He was a Seattle Mariner
for many years and still makes his home in the
Seattle area. I'm happy for him. As far as the World
Serious goes...the Phillies are a powerful club with
powerful fans and you've just seen the outcome.
I hope the TB Rays will be back next year to defend the
AL crown.

Phillies Phans celebrate their 4-3 win to win the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays during the continuation of game five of the 2008 MLB World Series.

With all the excitement came a lot of celebration. And, with a lot of celebration came what well call Phans Gone Wild in the streets of Philadelphia.

A Philly School District bus rolled up on Broad St. and police rolled out with batons and riot gear determined to cool things off.

Fires were lit. Cars were turned over. Bottles were thrown at police. Glass, newspaper boxes and even the remains of a SEPTA bus shelter littered the streets.

A drunk driver smacked into a police cruiser sending two officers in Center City to Hahnemann University hospital, police said.

Over at Broad and Walnut, four men slipped through a busted glass door at Robinson Luggage Outlet swiping about half dozen pieces of luggage, according to Philly.com.

But, police are currently trying to gain control and break up the party.

Frankford and Cottman have simmered down. Police are working on Broad St. now.

Sounds like Detroit fans.  There probably wouldn't even be any Detroit left if, somehow, someway, the Lions won the Super Bowl.  Maybe before 2100, they might, but I'll bet the Bengals get there first.

Baseball's done for 2008. Glad of it. Very strange season. The one saving grace? jamie Moyer gets a ring. Time for Mr. Moyer ta quit? Why would he? He's only 45! A kid compared ta Uke!

Now...let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Bury Philly!

I'm sure if Philly offers him a contract...he'll be back.
Jamie's not a whole lot different from Tim Wakefield.
Slow weird stuff that fucks up the timing of most hitters.
Jamies record with the Phills this year almost assures
him of at least one more season. It almost defies logic
when a pitcher who has a 82mph fastball and an assortment
of junk pitches in the 72mph range can be so successful
against the high priced lineups these days.

I was at a game at Safeco about three years back with Moyer the starter. He threw a couple 'fast' balls in at 78-80 MPH. Then came a breaker, and a change-up...that floated in at 67-MPH! Below seventy! How the hell can a baseball stay in the strike zone at those speeds?

Defies logic! And he struck out SIX pitching like that! They won it 4-2 over Detroit that time.

Maybe he oughta go out on top like Troll says. After all he got his long awaited ring...

Jamie is a Scorpio. Scorpios are tuff and stubborn. My guess
he thinks he can keep this up on a year to year basis until
he hit's 50. Hell...a couple million a year is pretty good wages
for someone in his age group. (or any age group)
