AP Sources: Tentative deal to send Holliday to As

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP)Star outfielder Matt Holliday appears headed to the Oakland Athletics in a surprising move for a franchise known more for shedding stars than adding them.

Two people familiar with the proposed deal said Monday the As and the Colorado Rockies have reached a tentative agreement. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been finalized and details were still in the works.

It was unclear whom Colorado would get for the two-time All-Star. One of the people said reliever Huston Street, lefty starter Greg Smith and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez were among the players who had been discussed in recent days.

Holliday, MVP of the 2007 NL championship series, is due to make $13.5 million next season and then will be eligible to become a free agent.

He was scheduled to have a physical Tuesday, one of the people said. The big-hitting left fielder unexpectedly dropped in on the general managers meetings last week in Dana Point, Calif.

The tentative trade was earlier reported by SI.com and ESPN.com.

Talks are continuing. Theyre very fluid and at this point, everythings speculation, Rockies spokesman Jay Alves said, speaking on behalf of general manager Dan ODowd.

Oakland owner Lew Wolff, attending a regional luncheon of Associated Press Sports Editors, wouldnt confirm or deny a trade but said he had already spoken with general manager Billy Beane three times on Monday.

Billys doing different things right now, Wolff said.

The As are known for making big trades, cutting payroll during a rebuilding process that Beane is committed to at all levels in the organization. Gonzalez and Smith were among the six players Oakland acquired last winter when it traded ace and All-Star Dan Haren to Arizona.

Back in January 2001, the As acquired Johnny Damon from the Kansas City Royals in a three-team, nine-player dealand this might be the clubs closest thing since then to the magnitude of that blockbuster move.

Oakland has watched Damon, Jason Giambi, Miguel Tejada and the Big Three pitchers of Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito depart for big money elsewhere. Yet there is thought Giambi, now a free agent, could be back in Oakland this offseason.

The 28-year-old Holliday, playing half his games at Coors Field, has 128 homers and 483 RBIs in five big league seasons. His best year was 2007, when he won the NL batting title with a .340 average and had 36 homers and a league-best 137 RBIs in helping the Rockies reach the World Series. He was runner-up to Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins for NL MVP.

Oakland was last in the majors leagues with a .242 batting average this season and last in the AL with 646 runs.

If we can bring a little bit of hitting talent to our current team I think the pitchers wont get as frustrated as they were late in the season, Wolff told the gathering of sports editors. Youre always rebuilding and regenerating. Its fun. We want to win. I want to win. Were going to try to be there again if we can.

The As used eight starters in left field and finished 75-86, their worst record since 1998. Oakland advanced to the AL championship series in 2006 before being swept by the Detroit Tigers.

Street, a 25-year-old right-hander, lost his job as Oaklands closer during season and finished 7-5 with a 3.73 ERA and 18 saves in 25 chances. He joins a bullpen that includes Manny Corpas and saw closer Brian Fuentes become a free agent. Street can become free agent after the 2010 season. A message left for Street was not immediately returned.

Smith, 24, went 7-16 with a 4.16 ERA in 32 starts during his first major league season. Gonzalez, 23, was also in his first big league season and hit .242 with four homers and 26 RBIs in 302 at-bats.

The AL west is/has always been real competetive.
The Angels year after year have been loading up.
They got the dough and get the extra superstars
in the free agency. Oakland relies on mircles, lucky finds
from the free agency and a potent farm system.
The Mariners not that far distant from the 116 win season
have a whole different system that with any blessing at
all can upset the applecart and be in the running. Texas
chronically has pitching woes as the heat of the summer
takes its toll. So far in Mariner camp we got a new GM.
The hunt for a new manager is on with 7-8 candidates.
I can see already that we're going to finish last again.
No free agency players looking for that world serious ring
are going to end up here. The Ken Griffey Jr. thing and
whether we get him here is a very up in the air deal.
Personally I think Griffey has reached the point in his career
that a steady DH job is something that he can accel at.
The M's since Edgar Martinez departed as a DH have sucked.
Griffey can have several years at DH with the M's and add to
his numbers. Until we get our leadership settled, hard to say
what the Mariners might do in getting this team back into the hunt.
It's amazing today on how many Japanese players are sought
after. The M's could land a couple of Japanese players that could
turn the season around. Who knows...other than I miss baseball
on the tube already.

Steinbrenner: Yanks make offer to CC Sabathia

NEW YORK (AP)Joe Girardi said this week hed enjoy showing free agents around the new Yankee Stadium. CC Sabathia is one of the players the New York manager has in mind for a tour of the spacious clubhouse, players lounge, indoor batting cage and underground hot tub.

Free-agent season opened Friday with the Yankees planning to give Sabathia a record offer for a pitcher.

Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner confirmed Friday night at the teams spring training complex in Tampa, Fla., that an offer was made to Sabathia, and that proposals will be forthcoming for pitchers A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe.

Yes, Steinbrenner said when asked if an offer was made to Sabathia. And were prepared to make offers to Burnett and Lowe.

The Yankees formulated a proposal to the big lefty that would exceed Johan Santanas $137.5 million, six-year contract with the New York Mets both in total and average, a baseball official familiar with the negotiations said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to divulge details.

Steinbrenner declined to give details about the Sabathia offer.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and Greg Genske, one of Sabathias agents, did not return telephone calls seeking comment.

Steinbrenner said he felt the Yankees will be successful in the free-agent market.

Im starting to become very optimistic, Steinbrenner said. I think its going to be mutually beneficial to us and for these particular players that were after for them to join the Yankees.

Sabathia went a combined 17-10 for Cleveland and Milwaukee this year after winning the 2007 AL Cy Young Award, and is considered the best starting pitcher in this years free-agent class.

On Friday morning, the Yankees gave a media tour of the new ballpark, scheduled to be substantially completed by Feb. 17. The oval clubhouse has wide lockers, with a replica of the stadium frieze above them, and the Yankees hope one will be Sabathias.

Other top free-agent starters are likely will wait for Sabathia to set the price for pitchers.

The signing of CC is going to create probably a truer market for a number of the pitchers, mainly because the clubs that are bidding on CC didnt get him, and the demand for the other pitchers will be greater, said agent Scott Boras, who represents free agents Oliver Perez and Lowe.

The 171 players who filed for free agency after the World Series could start negotiating money with all teams starting at 12:01 a.m. EST Friday. Boras, based in California, said his phone was ringing repeatedly late Thursday night.

I got eight phone calls. They didnt wait till the business day. Youre talking about owners, your talking about general managers, people taking very aggressive stances with particular players, said Boras, who also represents outfielder Manny Ramirez and first baseman Mark Teixeira, among the top free-agent sluggers.

They wanted to make sure they were on the board making offers, Boras said.

Francisco Rodriguez tops the available relief pitchers, a group that also includes Brian Fuentes and Kerry Wood. Agent Paul Kinzer said he had received inquiries from four teams about K-Rod, who saved a record 62 games for the Los Angeles Angels.

I just think weve got to be patient. Well know when the fits right, Kinzer said. When we get closer, well probably meet with the people, maybe check out the area, living arrangements, that type thing, and then make a decision.

He also reported an aggressive market for another client, shortstop Rafael Furcal.

Theres been about five or six serious teams already on him today, and I expect that to even go up because theres been at least eight or more that have been in contact, Kinzer said.

Commissioner Bud Selig repeatedly cautions teams to be careful in their spending, but the economic downtown doesnt appear likely to depress salaries for top players.

We think that the time of free agents will still be recession-proof, said Lew Wolff, owner of the low-revenue Oakland Athletics. We think the second tier will present some opportunities.

Other high-profile free agents include pitchers Ryan Dempster and Trevor Hoffman; first baseman Jason Giambi; outfielders Garret Anderson, Bobby Abreu, Milton Bradley, Pat Burrell, Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr.; catchers Jason Varitek and Ivan Rodriguez; and third baseman Casey Blake.

A lot of the owners want to sit down and have a meeting with some of the players, Boras said. Theres a couple players in this market that pay for themselves, in Teixeira and Ramirez, and they know that.

Its rare that a player spends his entire career with one team. Wood wanted to stay with the Cubs, who instead acquired Kevin Gregg as a less costly alternative.

It will be tough sitting on the other side, Wood said.

AP Sports Writers Rick Gano and Janie McCauley and AP freelance writer Mark Didtler in Tampa, Fla., contributed to this report.

Shit...the Tribe needs a closer

Wood wanted to stay with Cubs

CHICAGO (AP)Kerry Wood prepared himself mentally and emotionally last season, knowing it might be his last one with the Chicago Cubs. Turned out, it was.

Wood wanted to stay with the only team hes ever pitched for, but the economic realities of the game and the teams needs in other areas prevented that from happening.

After recovering from serious shoulder problems and numerous injuries that have sidetracked his career as a starter, Wood became a top closer last season. And now as a free agent, he can hit the market and command a multiyear contract that the Cubs were not willing to offer.

Its bittersweet. Obviously this is my first choice. I wanted to stay here and the best choice for me and my family. But thats part of baseball right now, Wood said in a conference call Friday.

Woods comments came one day after the Cubs traded for Marlins reliever Kevin Gregg. General manager Jim Hendry told reporters that the fair thing was for the team to let Wood get a deal he deserved.

The GM had already told Wood face-to-face what the Cubs were planning and that getting him a multiyear was not one of the top priorities. On Friday, Wood lauded Hendry for his honesty.

Chicago hopes to bring back free agent starter Ryan Dempsterthe guy Wood replaced as closer last seasonand add some left-handed offensive punch.

But Wood is one of the most popular players in team history. He pointed out that Cubs fans watched him grow up from a pimply faced, 17-year-old, and when my tenure is done Im leaving married with two kids.

Hes also leaving with a bag full of memoriesa 20-strikeout game against the Astros in 1998 in his fifth major league start when he went on to become the NL Rookie of the Year; a 2003 season when he helped the Cubs reach Game 7 of the NLCS, where he started and lost despite hitting a home run.

I choked, he said the night of that defeat.

Wood said this season was one of the most gratifying hes ever experienced.

After winning the closers role in spring training, he saved 34 of 40 games, his fastball blazing in the mid 90s mph again. He pretty much reinvented his career with the impressive return.

That career appeared to be nearly over in 2007 as he battled shoulder problems for a third straight season. But he made a stirring comeback in August that year after the pain in his shoulder mysteriously went away and pitched well in relief.

Hes made 12 trips to the disabled list and missed the entire 1999 season after elbow ligament replacement surgery.

I would love to change that, but cant change that, he said. I couldnt change it at the time. Those things happen. I dont think this year would have been as rewarding as it was, if I hadnt gone through those things.

He said hed given a great deal of thought to what it might be like to return to Wrigley Field and play against the Cubs in a different uniform

It will be tough sitting on the other side, he said.

Wood signed a three-year, $32.5 million deal in March of 2004 and when that expired after his rash of injuries, he got one-year deals in each of the last two seasons.

He said he would have been agreeable to another one-year deal.

Yeah. I think that avenue was kind of approached, but again like I said, theyve got some issues theyve got to take care of, Wood said. It is what it is. It didnt work out.

Now Wood hopes to find a new job as quickly as possible, saying he wants to go to a team with a chance to winpreferably in the National Leagueand a place with a good atmosphere for his family. He plans to keep a home in Chicago where he and his wife are involved in charity work.

In 10 seasons over 11 years with the Cubs, Wood compiled a 77-61 record with a 3.65 ERA and 1,407 strikeouts in 276 games.

Wood said the incessant talk of the 100-year anniversary of the Cubs last World Series winner got old, but didnt really bother him this past season. Chicago won the NL Central for the second straight year, only to be swept out for the second straight year in the first round.

And if the Cubs do finally make a run deep into the playoffs as they were expected to this season, it will be without their familiar No. 34.

Im disappointed I wont be on the team that does it, Wood said.

Johnson becomes free agent, talks with D-Backs end

In this June 25, 2008, file photo, Arizona Diamondbacks starter Randy Johnson pitches against the Boston Red Sox in the first inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston. Johnson filed for free agency on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, after failing to reach a contract agreement to return to the Diamondbacks.

AP - Nov 13, 6:27 pm EST

PHOENIX (AP)Randy Johnson filed for free agency on Thursday after failing to reach a contract agreement to return to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The 45-year-old lefty is five wins shy of 300 and hopes to find a team where he can continue to pitch at a high level and contribute to another world championship, agents Barry Meister and Alan Nero said in a statement.

The agents said they met in Phoenix on Monday with Diamondbacks chief executive officer Jeff Moorad and general manager Josh Byrnes to explore every option for Randy to remain a Diamondback in 2009 and for the remainder of his career.

The Diamondbacks have a budget based on their clubs financial situation and obviously viewed Randys contract in that context, the agents said. Randy considered every reasonable compromise, including offering to take a 50 percent pay cut, all to remain a Diamondback. However, the economic situation did not lend itself to an agreement.

Johnson made $16 million last year and went 11-10 with a 3.91 ERA. He struck out 173 and walked 44.

Byrnes, who said the sides had conversations through the week into Thursday, would not rule out still signing Johnson but added something would fundamentally have to change in our position or their position or both.

The Diamondbacks will not budge on their policy of not giving contracts that include player incentives.

As a policy its one we stick to and will continue to stick to, Byrnes said.

He praised the spirit of the conversations.

Both sides worked very hard to find an equitable deal, Byrnes said. We couldnt do it.

Byrnes said the club envisions a rotation of Brandon Webb, Dan Haren, Doug Davis, Max Scherzer and Yusmeiro Petit next season.

Theres a chance we might try to find another person that would add to our depth, Byrnes said.

Johnson and Toronto pitcher A.J. Burnett were the only players to file for free agency Thursday, the final day of the 15-day window. The 171 players who filed can start negotiating money with all teams starting Friday.

A five-time Cy Young Award winner, Johnson won the NL Cy Young from 1999-2002 with Arizona.

The Big Unit was co-MVP with Curt Schilling in the 2001 World Series victory over the New York Yankees. He went 21-6 with a 2.49 ERA and 372 strikeouts that year.

Johnson has 4,789 strikeouts, second to Nolan Ryan on the career list, and pitched a perfect game.

Johnson came back for a second stint with the Diamondbacks in 2007 after a trade with the Yankees. He underwent the third back surgery of his career that year.

In January 2005, the Diamondbacks traded him to the Yankees. Johnson and his family have long made their home in the Phoenix suburb of Paradise Valley.

Randy will miss the overwhelming support the fans have shown him throughout the years, his agents said. He wishes the Diamondbacks great success in 2009 and beyond.

If by some chance all these high priced free agents
can sign a huge contract with some team, I'm wondering
at what point in the near future that attendence to
Major League Sports is going to drop off so dramatically
that the whole deal comes crumbling down. Thousand's of
hard working American's are losing their jobs daily. The
economy is in the shitter with no light at the end of the tunnel.
Pro sports are likely to be the next industry going by the wayside.
