The History Channel has a new series on the tube
called "Extreme Trains". The first 3 shows have been
pretty darn good. Seems to come on Tuesday nights.
Check your local listings. Sure the whole series will be
repeated at some point in time. The History Channel
website is likely to give you some sort of heads up if
you are a taping fool like me.

Read about the series last week in a leftover USA Taday newsrag section... Condutor of some short line was the 'commentator' quoted in the article... Gues he's a rabid foamer who knows everything there is ta know about your jobs.

Uke avises all you TY&E grunts ta tune in for a few refresher 'classes' because ya never know, ya might catch a tip or three ta use on your next trip!

I watched it last night at the AFHT. It was about taking a BNsf container train fro LA to Ft. Worthless. Had some cool shots of Cajon, the Mojave, and some fucking trench through town.

I couldn't relate, since they were running 70 mph to Barstow. I have never gone faster than 60 on a train.

I thought 60 mph was top speed on the entire BNsf system. Briz Bucket Buehler? Our east end is 70, but I leave that to the UP asswipes. I stay on the 60 mph SP lands.

No, you must be thinking of NS.  On one of the few interesting parts of the show they showed the comp screen and they were doing every bit of 70mph.

You'd be ready to throw that guy off the engine by the time you started to pull.

Pipes, believe it or not, there used to be places you've been that the track speed was 65 MPH.

I've heard some "Tales from the second Unit", where soon to be retired guys (from your side) ran the pig train like they do out west.

During my railfanning experiences over the years,
the "fast" trains especially freight which I think is
the best barometer of top notch track. Think it
was back in 1984 when I rode the Southwest Chief
over Santa Fe trackage from Chicago to LA. The
Santa Fe had/has a damn quick route. The maximun
speed for pasenger service for most of the country
has been 79mph. The Southwest Chief through Arizona
and eastern California kicks it up to 90-95mph. I'll
tell you that are definetly aware that your moving
that fast. It was rush (no pun intended).
I have a couple memorable trips to the BNSF Columbia
George line on the Washington State side. They run some
fast freights on that line. There is quite a difference viewing
a train doing 50mph and one doing 60mph. One morning
I caught a couple westbounds at Washougal and there was
eastbound empty coal train waiting for them. By the time
I could throw my tripod and camera into the car and get
back on the highway, the empty coal train was in 8th notch
and got a good head start on me. Took me nearly 15 miles
of risky driving to finally catch up and get a little ahead enough
to try to get a video of it. I saw the opportunity and came to a
sreeching halt near a road crossing, got my tripod and camera out and
super hastily got ready. The leader to this video is about a second
and a half. This fucking train was doin' all of 60mph and it was
probably the most exciting footage I've ever taken. 120 coal
cars never took less time to pass by.

Coal empties are 60 mph trains provided they have the low belly bottoms. They are restricted to 55 otherwise, because of truck hunting...

Well I guess they were good to go for 60mph as I
still can't believe this rollby. I hope at some time in
the future to get this video on the net for your viewing
pleasure.

Running time for our 60 mph Z's 254 miles DEN-MCN is 4hrs. 20 mins. Amtk 3hrs 40mins.  Empty 60 mph coal trains 88 miles DEN-BURSH 1hr 35mins where they divert to head up to the powder river coal fields. I tell the new kids on the block to stand way off when giving a roll bye and I also almost always get off so I'm in the running position in case. Seen the results when on of these babies leave the rails and it ain't pretty.

Somebody at work told me it was a kick ta see the show where they changed out a turbocharger on a Dash-9.

Pretty quickly. Edited film of course... Takes a few hours. Sometimes longer with older units...

But like I said, I'll catch up when the DVD set is issued.
