We had a Handle Off expert.

Also used to assist the application on those dual stand locos with the EBV.

How were they doing it, HHB?

Amen, brother.  Those guys were engineers!!!!!!!  We're just sort of motormen, trying to comply with a bunch of rules written to the lowest common denominator.

There was an engineer I knew of but never worked with who was reputed to be an absolute genius with the air, still, one day, he didn't quite get enough and slid right by a stop signal.   Ah, stop and stay signal in those days.  Still, I knew a lot of people who did work with him and they said they didn't know how he did some of the things he did.  Yeah, he'd been a Wabash man.

I loved stretch braking, being able to do that and hit it right on the head was great.  Bastards.  They took a lot of the enjoyment out of the job when they said, "Dynamic or else!"

Im no where near "old head" status like the rest of you but that is how my elmer taught me to run the Diego sub...Stretch braking....And when I was on my own, I was quite good at it....The best feeling was settin the air just at the right time to get the speed down to where you needed to be ...You knew you were a fuckin noob when you didnt kick it off fast enough and had to throttle back up to get back to speed....

I still have the nasty 4 page letter the RFE mailed me when autoscam took over and it pinpointed every spot I stretched brake and told me to knock that shit off...

Now a daze, I rarely touch the air unless we have to stop....99.9% of my braking is now done with the dyno...*sigh*
