MITCH ALBOM | NEW ORLEANS 42, DETROIT 7

Lions lose and for an encore Ford will stand pat!

Youve got to be kidding.

William Clay Ford Sr., with the garbage product he disguises as a football team, actually said he wanted his two-headed front-office team to RETURN next year?

Its beyond belief, isnt it?

On a day when the Lions players showed how truly awful they had become, the owner one-upped them in ineptitude. It was like the owner of the Titanic, as the ship was sinking, announcing, Next Im gonna build an airplane.

Ford wins the prize. He is the worst. He is the biggest problem in this franchise and easily the most maddening. The fact he can contemplate returning anybody or anything from what already has tied the worst single-season losing streak in NFL history is incomprehensible.

And yet there he was, telling a Booth Newspapers reporter before Sundays 42-7 loss that he wanted Tom Lewand and Martin Mayhew back next year, possibly in their roles as chief operating officer and general manager. Those would be the current roles that have led to 0-15.

As for somebody new, somebody who could take total charge the Bill Parcells-type guru fans have been praying for Ford said: Lets see whos available and what experience they have and see if they fit in any of our slots.

What slots? Vice President of Losing? Chairman of Missed Tackles? General Manager of Blown Defenses?

There are no slots here. There is no organization. And nobody great will want to slide in beside Lewand and Mayhew. Mr. Ford, is there something about total failure that you simply cant see? The place needs to be blown up.

And you first.

I still believe the Lions Fan became extinct sometime after the Eric Hipple era.

We've got a guy who is a devoted Lions fan, his family bought season tickets for years and I believe his father still does. Oh, he is a study in frustration and I think he isn't as devoted as his long-suffering father.

Every team in the NFL has had some success since the salary cap started in 93 except for the hapless Lions. Poor management and poor drafts and you have a culture of losing. Maybe if they moved backed to Portsmouth, Ohio things would change.

Portsmouth, that mediocre town on the Ohio River that has succeeded in keeping their expectations low for longer than Cy has been alive, probably wouldn't even take the Lions back.

If Ford keeps going south, it might happen. Y'think?

Is there talk of Bill Cowher coming out of retirement? The new Lions coach? The New Jets coach?

You know, Slugger, I can't think like those guys but why would Cowher even want to, he's probably got more money than he could spend and a cushy TV job and even without the job, why would he want to go freeze in Cleveland. And, although I believe there's little loyalty among bigtime professional sports people, a former Steelers coach coaching the Browns? Doesn't seem right, somehow.

I tend to agree. If you watch any of the CBS post game shows, you can see Cowher still shows some emotion when it comes to the Steelers. Right now he claims he's perfectly fine as an analyst for CBS. Dan Rooney was quoted in the Post-Gazzette backing this up as well.

I personally don't see him going to Cleveland. Why would he? If he did and failed like the others, his legacy and everything he accomplished in Pittsburgh would be tainted forever.

I would surmise that any Coach, entertaining a comeback in the NFL would stop at Joe Gibb's house for a big steaming cup of Reality.
Rumours were he was looking into a College venue.
If Barack gets a Real National Championship ( A College SuperBowl) for the NCAA, then I firmly believe that Bill is waiting for JoePa to finally lay down the rod. Then the Nittany Lions would stop watching the #1 spot go to the more Popular and Monied Western Teams.
