SD45-2 rebuild?

Hate ta burst anyone's bubble... But IF the unit was turbocharged from the factory, the engine won't run if the turbo can't spin.

Derated or no, the turbo is the ONLY way that air will enter the cylinders ta burn fuel ta produce power ta turn those RPMs into electricity ta run the motors ta turn the wheels!

Naturally aspirated engines [blower units] will run without the turbo. The caveat being those units will produce 1800-2000 ponies max. That's it grls! Ya can't 'bolt' the turbo so it won't spin. Period.

The engine will not run without it ta move air into the engine. The turbo is gear-driven off the cam gears until six-seven notch, when exhaust gases cause it ta freewheel off the clutch... Then you'll have a 'boost' in air pressure/volume ta maximize the horses.

Derating from 3000 ta 2300 horses only requires a few minor adjustments... Different governor, and lower excitation of the main generator/alternator.

Then the turbocharger makes no sense. It never sees higher RPMs ta burn enough fuel ta keep the exhaust gases moving, and those engines so modified are less efficient than non-turbocharged units [Roots blower type].

More words than neccesary, but...best case scenario, wanna derate 'em? Strip the turbos, put blowers on...go with 2000 ponies, and heavy, six axle-power for hump ops!

That's where the bolt goes. The clutch.

A lotta people don't understand that the Turbo on a Railroad Diesel engine is "Mechanically Assisted", or for the purist a "TurboSupercharger".
Below notch 6 it acts like a blower...ie run mechanically from the engine.
Costs a lotta bucks and labor to remove that big chunk of steel off the front of the engine. Then ya gotta put a blower back on. More bucks.
Easier to leave it on and bolt it so it can't take off on its own. If someday ya want the power back, ya just remove the bolt.

Hey Lake, I just caught this thread...Sorry Im late

They use a lot of those old 45's for dedicated rock train service....Usually will have 5 of them on the head end....Nothing sounds better than hearing all 5 in run 8 chuggin up hill....That said, nothin soulds sweeter than all 5 in full dyno goin downhill either....Yes, I said all 5! 30 fuckin axles of DB whinin away!

The last rock train I had was quite awhile ago and all the units had the old ATSF blue and yellow....Beautiful!

The SD40-2T/SD45-2T Tunnel motor was the best locomotive ever built. MARRCO even kept a few.

CN couldn't wait to get rid of the WC's 45's. We were told at the takeover "CN as better units in storage than you have on the mainline." So they ran the 45's into the ground, the last one fell in Jan '07, and the CN kept those good units in storage and gave us some of the most gawdawful shittiest SD40's you have ever seen. Don't get me wrong, I love the SD40, but these were worse than the 45's they replaced.

There is actually something worse than a CSX SD40?

I would have loved to see that. When I first started foaming the BNSF in 2001, blue/yellow warbonnets were common as dirt. Now it's 2009 and they're rare oddities. Still a fair number of red/silver warbonnets, but hardly any blue/yellow. SD40-2s are hardly ever to be seen either: ex-SF, ex-BN, or pumpkins. Fucking Dash-9s are taking most of the fun out of foaming.

DASH9's really took the fun out of running trains.

Piss poor, lame-brained, no experience, petty, trying to justify their own jobs thru discipline, jerk off, devil worshipping baby eating managment took the fun out of running trains.

It would be fun to interview those in charge of the power
pools for various railroads. They don't come across as being
sentimental or nostalgic. Every model of locomotive eventually
becomes the "Last of the Mohicans". I've always loved the SD45.
BN had quite a fleet and I think I've seen every one of them at one
time or another. BN never had any SD45-2's. ATSF had about 70 of
them. SD45-2 are difficult to readily identify as such because of
the lacking of the "flared radiators". If one were to zip by at 50mph
you'd be hard pressed to know it was a SD45-2 unless you were
dialed in on railroad locomotive roster numbers.
