...which all of a sudden seem ta flood [really!] Interbay! Admittedly at first they were just one more annoyance ta deal with.

Lately...that's damn near all we see for major work. And IF the bigs are ta be trusted...we're about ta see a deluge!

Few nights ago we pulled a motor which had the pinion chopped...ta roll her into the shop.

Dropped that motor...then put an idler in ta ship the beast ta Barstow 'cause the replacement motor was on a flatbed...stuck in a drift in Wyoming. Two days later...the girls pulled the idler, and put another 'found' GE motor in.

WE get all this work, but GE still refuses ta supply Interbay with 'ready' motors...

Meanwhile their units fall apart enroute ta Seattle. And the damn things come in for us ta fix! Everybody here hates GE's. We have noone trained ta fix 'em, and no parts ta do so...IF we did have the knowledge. But for now... We struggle...along with GEunk!

Job security? You guys have no idea. None!

230 GE Transportation workers in NW Pa. off work
ERIE, Pa. GE Transportation says 230 workers in Erie will be out of work through March because of a lack of business, the Associated Press reports.

The locomotive manufacturer says most of the affected workers have volunteered to take the time off starting Monday until the end of March.

The company will re-evaluate those positions then, but the company now expects the workers return to duty.

The workers should be eligible for unemployment benefits.

GE Transportation is Erie County's largest employer, with 5,600 workers.

We've got plenty we could send.  You don't care about the black paint on them, I hope.

Send 'em the blue desktops first!

(After they put brake shoes on the 8355 and some other minor repairs to correct a few FRA violations.) Edit: Not that I'm qualified to find FRA defects, or anything, you know. I just report them, I don't know for sure they are FRA defects, you know.

It's been so fucking cold up here that the horns on our -9's have been freezing up. Any of you guys on other than LINTCO been having that problem? I figured it's because the horn is mounted ahead of the exhaust stack so it's not getting any warm air at all. However, I don't remember this problem being all that common in previous cold snaps.

Yes, BD, we've been having that problem, it starts out with the delayed blow, you start to blow the whistle and it doesn't kick in for a couple of seconds. Then it gets worse. There's been numerous train delays around here because of whistles that won't blow.

Frozen whistles? Anybody else ever climb up on top of a locomotive with a armload of fusees and thaw one out. Ah, in my younger days, I did. When they were deafeningly right over the cab. I'm sure I wasn't the only one that ever did it, either.

I did that a few times in my younger days tu. I have also wrapped garbage bags around them so that they wouldn't pack solid with snow.

Twice, Slugger, that I remember. Once, it was just across town and the other time, it was about 30 miles.

I had an SD45 with a really phuked up whistle valve, it had to be pulled a certain way to start and then it had to be jerked to shut it off. 200 miles. those years of self abuse really came in handy that day.

How about those looks you got by people near the tracks? I remember going by a reservoir where people walk around for exercise. You should have seen the "WTF" looks I got.
