UP, EEOC settle sex discrimination suit
LOS ANGELES An equal rights group says Union Pacific Railroad has agreed to pay $75,000 to settle a sex discrimination lawsuit, the Associated Press reports.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission also said Tuesday the court will enforce a consent decree that requires the railroad to train managers and supervisors on discrimination.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Los Angeles after the commission tried to reach a voluntary settlement in the case of a female assistant foreman who was not hired despite having more experience than other applicants.

The commission says the woman would have been the first female system material foreman in the country had she been hired.

A message left with Union Pacific was not immediately returned Tuesday evening.
