I guess if ya work on the flat land and yer trains are never bigger than 4000 tons, and yer shop people dont have a clue how ta fix anything newer than stone age then ya just mite pick GM over GE.

Out here where the coal gets hauled around grades up to 3 percent with one curve built on top of the last one, We have tried ta run the GM's off.
Oh, they still try ta send them over, now ya gotta stop and pick up a SD-50 "snapper" engine. Ya dont need it if ya got 2 GE's. Its 2 extra moves the crews gotta make, when they have a GM.
It is better than having to wade back thru snow waist deep to crank on 100% handbrakes, so the Boss dont bitch too loud.

Around here if you are sitting with 1 eng in your consist with an electric air compressor, and you pull the throttle out past one to pump up the air the fuel conservation boyz will have ya in on the carpet, squirmimg like school kid with a case of the worms. Definate NO-NO.

One of my favorite things to bust the road forman at Oak Island during the Trenton Line WAR. He came up on the engine and wanted my hogger to notch it up to pump. I told said foreman that my hogger would be in deep doo doo if he did. Told said RFE to call ours and learn about the ERAD.

The newer GE's have a two-speed electric
air compressor..  Low speed is idle too 2
notch.. So actually get more capacity out of them you need too be in 3 or 4 notch for it
too run in high-speed..
