ALTOONA, Pa. - Norfolk Southern has laid-off more than 50 workers from the Juniata locomotive shops, according to the WRTA Web site.
The move came just a day after company CEO Wick Moorman said he expects train shipping demand to drop to its worst level by the end of the current business quarter.
Moorman says there is a chance things could improve during the second half of the year.
The workers could be called back once the economy improves.
Norfolk Southern has cut about 4 percent of its workforce since December.
It has furloughed a total of about 1,200 employees and cut back on the number of train trips taken in a given period.

That's a bunch...at once! I thought our loss of three from Interbay was a big deal. Then again, we've been so marginalized since the marriage of BN and sf.
Seattle's not an important component of the whole. Krebs decided ta kill off the old Northern Lines when we merged. And now he's gotten his wish. Rather his suckcessor has.
Our traffic is indeed below last year's levels...and we're expecting more furloughs at Interbay by the beginning of May.
