SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad employees plan to join their counterparts on the Canadian Pacific Railway and pause to honor workers who have died or have been injured in the workplace, according to the Associated Press.
The observance is scheduled for 11 a.m. local time on Tuesday, April 28.
In a release, the company says trains across the DM&E's 2,500-mile rail network and locomotives in the train yards and terminals will stop for one minute of silence followed by a lone whistle as a further salute.
Also, shop workers, office employees and other workers will observe a minute of silence at the same time.
DM&E President Vern Graham says it's part of a continuing effort to strengthen the company's focus on workplace safety. The company says personal injuries have declined 43% in the first quarter of 2009 in comparison to the same period last year.
