Ten years ago today, Conrail disappeared into two other railroads.  'Cept for the shared assets, of course.  Nothing has been the same since.

It has really worked out well for NS. And the Conrail employees too.

I know a couple hundred Ex-Car Shop workers in Hollidaysburg, PA who would Disagree with ya Pipes.

Calvin, I believe Pipes was being "Smug and Cynical". Maybe.

What a mess it was. All the (alleged) preparations were completely wasted.

Has it been the long? I guess when the former Conrail guys refuse to retire it might make time seem faster. There are couple of dudes in their 70's and a few pushing 70 who are still working with no sign of stopping.

In the large terminal north of you, Slug, there's one remaining engineer who is 70 (I think) and hired out on the NKP in 1957.

The Pennsylvania Railroad, the New York Central,
Penn Central, Conrail...should be a clue as nothing
lasts forever in the railroad biz. Who knows...maybe
CSX and NS will merge to futher reduce what was once.

Nothing has been the same indeed!
It's all better!
An astounding success!
I'm looking ahead! (Just like I've All Ways done.)
-----------------------------------------

FROM:     WICK MOORMAN
SUBJECT:  TEN YEARS AND 3.5 TRILLION GROSS TON-MILES LATER
Ten years ago today, Norfolk Southern acquired part of
Conrail, increasing its route miles by half and welcoming some
10,000 new employees into the Thoroughbred family. The new NS
overcame some initial problems to rebuild its reputation as
the most efficient, customer-oriented Class One railroad in
North America, and our standing as the top safety performer
never slipped; just last month we won our 20th consecutive
Harriman Gold Medal.
A lot has happened in the last decade. Since Day One of the
Conrail transaction, Norfolk Southern trains have moved 3.5
trillion gross ton-miles of freight. We bought enough diesel
fuel to fill almost 60 supertankers (imagine what the number
would be if we werent extremely fuel-efficient), and laid
enough new rail to make up another transcontinental railway.
A train of every carload NS hauled in the last decade could
stretch to the moon and back twice -- and then some.
Impressive numbers, but more importantly, we have reached
unprecedented levels of operating efficiency and financial
performance by providing the high level of dependable service
our customers need, through initiatives such as our
Thoroughbred Operating Plan, and through innovative thinking
and hard work on the part of the entire Thoroughbred team.
And on behalf of the team, Id like to thank our customers,
our suppliers, our stockholders, and the communities we serve
for their support in helping us make this a decade of growth.
As satisfying as it is to look back and see how far weve
come, its even more exciting to look ahead. Our progress has
given us the strength to weather the current economic storm.
This recession will pass, and the long-term future for rail as
the safe, clean, and fuel-efficient transportation alternative
has never been brighter.
NS is ready to take advantage of the opportunities that a
recovering economy will bring, and I look forward to looking
back with you another 10 years from now and being amazed at
how far weve come.

Yeah, Freddie, it would be possible for him to be in power 10 years from now.

I'm so glad that Snippy posted that, I am pumped reading those inspiring words of accomplishment. Heck, maybe I'll even stick around another ten years. Nah.

Good grief what are these guys waiting for? All they are doing is donating money to railroad retirement. Retire already! Jeez!
