ALBERTVILLE, Ala. -- UTU member Dustin Moles, 33, a conductor on short line Alabama & Tennessee River Railroad, was killed late Wednesday (June 24) when the train on which he was riding derailed while being switched into a shipper facility, reports the Gadsden Times.
Moles was a member of Local 1972, Birmingham, Ala. He started working as a conductor in 2005. Before that, he was a police officer at Glencoe Police Department.
An assistant fire chief in Albertville said the police department got the call about 11 p.m. that a train had derailed and the conductor was missing.
By the time police and fire officials arrived, Moles was discovered, crushed between the derailed tanker car and a pile of scrap metal, according to the assistant fire chief.
It took the Albertville Fire Department about four hours to free his body.
The assistant fire chief said it appears Moles was riding on the rear of the 75-car Alabama & Tennessee River Railroad train, which was being switched to a shipper facility, when the derailment occurred.
