G.E. vs EMD------AGAIN!
Author: proudfoamer

Even though EMD is basically out of business, it feels great to read BNSF 20+year SD75'S are replacing G.E.'s almost new ES44's while they are out sick. NS & CSX are also waking up old EMD's to save G.E.'s butt while they do warranty work on those cheap techno-toasters. G.E's, there's good out of the box but they don't last long. Kinda like a ford truck.....EMD! EMD! EMD!

1994 = 20 years? not to mention, why were the EMDs sent to the storage track in the first place.

EMD the great "north" American fuck-up story.

SD70ACE and 2 other SD70AC.
Never even attempted firing the 3rd one up.
Had to call Mech desk to get 2 ond one running.
Then whilst doin that the lead piece of shit shut down.
Had to call Mech desk back to get it going. Then it would not load when I put reverser in forward and pulled the throttle out one notch it said no load, cycle the the computer control breaker.
Did that, eng loaded.
Fought the piece of shit the whole way up the road with just 103 empty hoppers.
Mothafakker still shoves when ya knock the throttle back, takes 2 minutes to load when you pull throttle out.
So much unlike anything else I run, What you think the train is doin, is no way close. Bitch waits to load....here comes a run in, Bitch keeps pullin...now were close to overspeed, knock it off, wait, now the bitch is 5mph slow..Fak this crap!!
Don't worry, I shop 'em every chance I get.
Why don't they take 'em down ta Florida and let JAX hear all the bitching first hand.

Interbay's been putting the 75s back inta revenue service as we speak. We start 'em, load test 'em, and check as much as we can before they're called for trains.

The yards get their orders from the 'power desk' in Ft. Worth...and the trainmasters take their orders from higher ups at terminals across the system. Tonnages, and territory, etc., rules on HP per ton, and available power.

And with so many failures of GEs...what the hell else ya gonna do? Not ta mention GE's footing the costs for these things...and they ARE 4300 ponies...honest pulling power.

But don't run 'em fourth behing GEs through a loooong tunnel! The GEs gobble up all the cool air...and starve the trailing EMDs for cool air ta cool the radiators... And they drop out...and alarms go off! And crews gotta isolate 'em. Until they cool down.

We discovered a fix... And we're running the 75s in sets of three. And the damn things run well now!

Yeah, and the 75s are painted in the old Santa Fe red/yellow/silver scheme, with BIG lettering on the side of carbodies announcing ta the world their origins...

The few, late models from 1995-6-7, are in BNsf orange/green. All of 'em run great! They've got DC traction motors, but the AC output from the big D-14 is rectified ta DC.

We've been lucky with 'em so far... Haven't blown a damn one up yet! Meanwhile GE continues takin' EVOs out of service everywhere! I hate ta say I knew...but I knew when the EVOs started showin' up, they'd have big problems very soon. Untested engines mainly. And trying ta match 4400-HP out of 12 cylinders instead of 16, like the old Dash-9 engines, the FDL-7... A proven powerplant!

Oh well...'they' get the big bucks ta know all this crap. Not me. I don't understand any of it!

I think loco rosters are made up the way they are just incase
certain models go T/U. BN went huge into the C30-7's and
the SD70MAC's while the Santa Fe took the GE bite and invested
in the all the new GE power. Think the powers to be for BNSF are
pro GE since they have over 2000 Dash-9's of various models.
Meanwhile they have a huge fleet of EMD SD-70 MAC's and ACE's too.
Maybe I'm wrong but the GE complaints seem to outweigh the EMD
complaints 2-1. Many of the forum composition run these beasts
day after day and many comments have been made. As of 7/24/09,
what's the answer? Would you rather be piloting a quartet of SD-70MAC's
or a quartet of C44-9's? Your answer has to be dependent on numerous
experiences in very demanding conditions.

I would rather have a new C45AC or a SD70M, we dont have MAC's except SD90MAC's and they are junk. SD70ACE is the biggest piece of shit ever to ride the rails. The old SD40-2T's and SD40's were great pullers and you could figure out most problems on the fly. But cab comfort was less than desireable and you shure as hell did'nt want to hit a log truck or a fallen old growth tree with one. I just runnem till they break then send them to the Roho to fix so I can break it again.

The bunch we put back in service all seem ta be out there pullin' somethin'! Might be the garbage trains, or smaller work trains...or 'merchandise' from Canada. But they ARE workin' again.

They're earnin' their keep at BNsf, and EMD has finally put  tagether the 'maint-packs' ta get the rest up and kickin' again.

Mostly air filters, and other special crap... But at least now we can keep our assignment rollin' and pullin' some revenue tonnage! The poor gals were just sittin' takin' up valuable railroad real-estate at Interbay.

Perhaps Ft. Worth has a plan for the line of SD-60s? Sure hope ta hear soon! We've got at least 20... Same engines, alternators, BIG DC traction motors, but without all the computers...and straight air-brakes, so the hogger can control trailing tonnage! And every damn one 3800 honest ta Gawd horses!

I don't know where this video belongs but just watch it anyway.
I've shot some very similiar video in the CP Fraser Canyon, BC,
where they spaced out DPU's every 30 cars or so on a coal train.
I hope to post that footage someday on the net.
