How NS keeps stored power ready to roll
pixel.gif
Norfolk Southern is taking steps to ensure that its stored locomotives are ready to roll when needed. "At the end of June, we had just over 600 locomotives stored, about 16% of our fleet," EVP and Chief Operating Officer Mark D. Manion said in a second-quarter earnings presentation. "In June we stated to reduce the number of locomotives stored from a high of 700 at the end of May. This reduction represents, in part, a need for more locomotives to handle an increase in coal trains from May to June, but more importantly to support a new effort to cycle our stored locomotives."

So am I suppose to clap? Breathe a sigh of relief? 16% of your
loco fleet is rusting because the economy is in the shitter.
The economy will be in the shitter for some time to come.
Time to alert all the 3rd world nations that you have loco's for sale.

We're tryin' ta get the big dogs down in Ft. Worth ta give thought to 'cycling' the fleet of LUGOs, ta keep 'em in running condition, and ready as needed!

Runnin' 'em hard, pullin' heavy trains across the Cascades, or through the Stampedes pullin coal, or tagged on the ass end shovin' mught just be what they need!

But you already know the answer ta that idea... The idea has merit, yes... But as is usual, it falls on deaf ears, and dead minds!

Grand idea Uke. Have you ever figured out how miles
to a gallon of diesel some of the current roster uses
versus the "setdown" roster?

Yes Krink. This explains the heretofore previously unprecedented
appearance of fresh paint on many Lintco GP-38's .
The old oil based 20 gallon rebuild scam lives again.
