(The following story by Jeff Sturgeon appeared on The Roanoke Times website on October 10, 2009.)

ROANOKE, Va. Norfolk Southern Corp. will move 30 jobs from Roanoke to Atlanta, effective Nov. 16, the company said.

Railroad spokesman Robin Chapman said Friday the move is designed to improve "communication, coordination and teamwork" between members of the railroad's safety and environment department -- the ones whose jobs are moving -- and four Atlanta-based departments with which the safety and environmental team works.

The departments are transportation, mechanical, engineering and customer service.

"No one is being laid off," Chapman said by e-mail.

Most of the affected employees will relocate with their jobs. A few who chose not to relocate can apply for other railroad jobs in Roanoke. Some are eligible for retirement, Chapman said.
