UP worker injured in rock slide
A Union Pacific Railroad worker was seriously injured in a rock slide near Dunsmuir, Calif., the Redding, Calif., Record Searchlight reports.

The conductor of a train spotted the man's arm sticking out of a rock pile Wednesday afternoon near the tracks, Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Susan Gravenkamp said Monday.

She didn't know the victim's name, age or hometown.

Union Pacific spokesman Tom Lange, when reached Monday after several days of failing to return phone calls, declined to provide any details about the incident, citing federal patient privacy laws.

The rock slide occurred north of Dunsmuir near Simpson Crossing, a steep area known for being prone to rock slides.

Gravenkamp said the injured employee was conducting repair and maintenance on a section of the tracks wired to notify trains of rock slides.

The train had been notified of such a slide and had slowed down when the conductor saw the man's arm in the rocks, Gravenkamp said.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Mount Shasta and later was taken by helicopter to Mercy in Redding, Gravenkamp said.
