CN to pay $25,000 for environmental testing after derailment

ROCKFORD, Ill. Canadian National Railway has agreed to pay $25,000 for environmental testing of soil and water after a train carrying ethanol derailed in Rockford last summer.
Canadian National will pay nearly $18,000 to the state's oil spill response fund. More than $7,500 will go to the hazardous waste fund to repay the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for testing and monitoring.
The state EPA will bill the railroad quarterly in the future. Officials say there are no signs of ethanol contamination.
The Illinois attorney general's office and Winnebago County sued Canadian National in July over the derailment's environmental impact.
The railroad also agreed to test wells in the area one more time to make sure drinking water is safe.
