(The following appeared on the Santa Barbara Edhat website on January 7, 2010.)

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - An employee of Union Pacific was injured Thursday when the hillside gave way beneath him. The 52-year-old man fell 100 feet to the beach.

He suffered moderate injuries but was able to walk to Gaviota State Beach, where he was treated and transported to a local hospital. The man and his coworkers were backing away from an oncoming Amtrak train when the accident happened.
