Yes, Calvin, you are correct, and there were these pioneers:

In the late 50s, C&O struck an agreement with the U.S. Post Office and the Railway Express Agency and, in May 1959, began rail van service on the 172-mile route between Grand Rapids and Traverse City, Mich. By 1964, a fleet of 81 rail vans operated as parts of passenger trains to Detroit, Chicago and Muskegon from a hub at Grand Rapids.

Late in 1961, C&O decided that the name "rail van" was inadequate for expanding their use as freight carriers, and renamed them RoadRailers.
