CONOVER, N.C. -- A train slammed into an empty station wagon left on the railroad tracks at Fourth St. Place, SE, on Tuesday (Feb. 9) night, the Hickory Daily Record reported.
The Norfolk Southern train conductor told police he saw a man and woman walking away from the car toward Newton. The crash was shortly after 7 p.m. at the crossing near Superior Petroleum and Fuel Company. It knocked the car off the tracks and down a bank.
Police were looking for a possibly drunk driver, said officer J.D. Miller with the Conover Police Department.
The 1986 Dodge station wagon is registered to a Sherrills Ford driver, according to police, who found the registration in the car.
