Derailment in Lincoln causes morning scare
LINCOLN, Neb. -- A train derailment in a Lincoln rail yard caused a scare early Tuesday morning on West O Street, because one of the cars that toppled was filled with about 23 tons of chlorine, the Journal Star reported.

Officials have determined that the car filled with chlorine did not leak at all, Lincoln Fire and Rescue Deputy Fire Chief Pat Borer said Tuesday. No injuries were reported.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue crews were called to the Hobson Yard, 801 W. O St., on a report that multiple cars had gone off the tracks. Borer said 15 turned completely on their sides.

Little information regarding the cause of the derailment was available early Tuesday morning. Borer said Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway officials estimated the train involved was going no more than 20 miles an hour at the time of the derailment.

BNSF regional spokesman Steve Forsberg said Tuesday morning that he was told that 19 empty cars were involved, as well as the chlorine-filled car and another containing grease.

"Why they derailed we don't know," Forsberg said.

Rosa Parks Highway and U.S. Highway 77 were closed in the area of the crash for several hours while officials determined that the chlorine car had not leaked. Borer said BNSF had a crew coming Tuesday morning to pick up the chlorine-filled car, put it on a flatbed and get it out of Lincoln.

They need a fire marshal to explain it to them.  There's a specialist in Philly that they could pay a consultant fee to.


Battalion Fire Chief Mike Kane tells The Philadelphia Inquirer that the cars apparently failed to switch from one track to another.

As far as injury accidents IN Linolcoln yard none know, with RCO a couple...Highway closure do to derailments in Lincoln yard engineer none known, RCO's 3, there have been a few engineer switch run threw in Lincoln yard, but now with the frequency of RCO run through switches here in Lincoln yard they even took the solar push button switches out because virtually every switch is replaced frequently with RCO's since there are only maybe 2 yard engineers left naughty.gifwave.gif. Remember I am talking about here.
