Ferromex to acquire 44 new locomotives E-mail
Friday, July 30, 2010

Grupo Mexico announced Thursday that Ferromex, the largest railroad company in Mexico, expects to invest $134 million for the year, mainly on infrastructure renewal, Octavio Ornelas, a director of the companys transportation arm, said on a conference call for investors. He also said Grupo Mexicos boardauthorized the acquisition of 44 new locomotives, which will increase cargo capacity by 7.5%.

Grupo Mexico saida proposed merger ofFerromexand Ferrosur, another railroad that is part of its transportation division, could come by the first quarter of next year, depending on approval by Mexicos competition commission.

Antitrust regulators objected to the merger, but inMaya federal court ruled in Grupo Mexicos favor and said the commission should consider the merger approved. The commissioncould still appeal that decision.

Sorry Ira...didn't mean ta ignore ya. Hadn't even realized anybody responded ta my last...

I visited the websight for FerroMex, but not being fluent in Spanish, I couldn't decipher anything concerning their power.

I would say that not beinga 'rich' outfit, they've been running anything and everything as far as locomotives. Most of their locomotives are cast off SD-40s, and older GEs. ALCOs have been mainline power as well. But EMD has been the preferred power.

Mexican railroads have leased/bought as much power as they could afford. Even from obscure, castoffs from further south, like homebuilt locomotives from Brazil.

Here ya go Ira. No thanks ta Troll, that rat-bastard. But...since both bigs [GE, and now CAT owned/operated EMD] have manufacturing facilities south of the border, Ferromex may try a mix. Say half-and-half.

Or go entirely with the least expensive. That much you already know.
