Man shot 16 times, survives

1 MAN SHOT 16 TIMES, SURVIVES

A 29-year-old man was shot 16 times shortly before 3 p.m. yesterday on Mascher Street near Cambria, in the Fairhill section, and survived, police said.

The man, whose identity was not released, was taken to Temple University Hospital in extremely critical condition.

Police were seeking the assailant and trying to determine the motive for the attack.

2 GRAYS FERRY HOME INVASION

Police are seeking several men for a home invasion yesterday morning in Grays Ferry. A man who lives on 30th Street near Wharton told police that he was in his second-floor bedroom at about 9:50 a.m. when four or five men burst into his home and beat him unconscious, said Officer Tanya Little, a police spokeswoman.

When he came to, he found himself bound with duct tape to a chair, Little added. He was able to break free and went to a neighbor's house to alert police. He refused hospital treatment. It was not determined what, if anything, had been stolen, police said.

3 MAN IN SUV SHOT IN W. PHILLY

Two gunmen unleashed a barrage of bullets at a 36-year-old man as he sat in the driver's seat of an SUV at 53rd Street and Cedar Avenue, West Philadelphia, at about 1 p.m. yesterday, police said.

The victim was hit twice in the head and twice in the arm, and was in extremely critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call Southwest Detectives at 215- 686-3183.

Lt. John Walker said that the gunmen, one of whom was wearing a gray hoodie, the other a dark-blue one, fired shots through the driver's-side window, the windshield and through the back window of the vehicle.

He said that the gunmen were on foot during the shooting, and ran south on 53rd Street afterward. Police did not yet have any leads on the gunmen or know why they had targeted the victim.

4 LAPTOPS STOLEN

FROM CHARTER SCHOOL

Police are searching for a man in connection with a theft from a Center City charter school yesterday afternoon.

About 12:05, a man walked into the Philadelphia Electrical and Technical Charter High School, on Chestnut Street near Broad, roamed the halls and stole two Dell laptops from classrooms, police said.

The bespectacled thief was wearing a blue "Spectra Security" guard jacket with fur around the collar, and black sneakers with white soles, police said.

Witnesses described him as about 5 feet 6 with a receding hairline. He is believed to be either a light-skinned black man or a Hispanic man between age 35 and 40 .

UPDATE:

VICTIM IDENTIFIED

IN STOLEN-CAR CRASH

Police have identified the passenger killed when a speeding, stolen car fleeing police rammed another car and three pedestrians Tuesday night in Kingsessing, as Kalil Sephus, 20, of Warrington Avenue near 56th Street.

The driver, 19, whose name police haven't released, remained in critical condition at Hahnemann University Hospital after the 7:10 p.m. crash on 58th Street near Chester Avenue, said Officer Tanya Little. He is under police guard and is expected to be charged.

Two of the three elderly pedestrians who were hit remain hospitalized at Hahnemann in critical condition, too.

One is a 79-year-old woman, with a broken leg; the other, an 84-year-old man, with head injuries.

Police began chasing the car, which had been reported stolen in Upper Darby, at 55th and Kingsessing, when the driver spotted police on routine patrol and sped away, Little said.

The driver was heading west on Chester Avenue when he blew through a red light and hit a 2007 Hyundai heading north on 58th, Little said.

The first car then smashed a utility pole, ejecting Sephus, Little added.

The driver of the second car and a third pedestrian, an 82-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries.

6 shot in less than one hour in Philly on Friday night

How's this for disturbing: Six people were shot in the city last night - in less than an hour.

The trail of blood began on Crowson Street near Locust Avenue in East Germantown, where a 22-year-old man was shot in the hip at 6:59 p.m., said police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The victim, whose name was not released, was admitted to Albert Einstein Medical Center in stable condition.

At 7:44 p.m., three men were shot "in various parts of their bodies" on Provident Street near Limekiln Pike in Cedarbrook by two thugs who drove off in a Nissan Maxima, Small said. Moments later, another man was found shot in the hand on nearby Ogontz Avenue near 78th Avenue. That man told police he was shot by someone in a car, Small said, though it was unclear if it was the Provident Street gunman.

All four victims were admitted to Einstein in stable condition, Small said.

At about the same time as the Cedarbrook shooting, a 20-year-old man was shot in the head on a basketball court at 22nd and Jefferson streets in North Philly, Small said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was admitted to Temple University Hospital in critical condition. Investigators had no suspects or motives, Small said.

Cops post video in hunt for 3 goons in attack

Police released surveillance video yesterday of an Old City beat-down in hopes of finding the trio of thugs who sent a 27-year-old man to the hospital with a broken jaw and shattered eye socket.

The victim, whose name was withheld by police, and his friend, 25, left the Mad River Bar, on Chestnut Street near 2nd, about 2 a.m. last Saturday and headed toward the E-Z parking lot on the same block. A few minutes later, a white male in his mid-20s with blond hair, about 6-feet tall with a black T-shirt and white pants, began arguing with the victim, said Officer Christine O'Brien, a police spokeswoman.

Video surveillance released yesterday shows the blond male and two other men chasing the two friends into the parking lot. They started hitting the 25-year-old but when the 27-year-old tried to intervene, the thugs turned him into a punching bag.

The two others seen punching and kicking the victim in the video are described by police as a white man in his 20s with olive skin and dark hair, wearing a light-colored shirt and pants; and a white man, also in his 20s, with olive skin and a black T-shirt with white sleeves and a red hat, police said.

The man with blond hair and a black T-shirt is seen punching the 27-year-old into unconsciousness. The victim required six stitches to his forehead.

The video can be viewed on YouTube at http://bit.ly/jqu4Rx

Tipsters should call Central Detectives at 215-686-3093.

He was attempting to repossess a car at Ninth and Pike Streets about 3 a.m. when a man in an orange hoodie approached, pointed a silver revolver, and demanded money, police said. Both men struggled and the robber opened fire, wounding the repo man, police said. The gunman fled on foot. - Inquirer staff

Robbers kill store clerk working graveyard shift in North Philly

It didn't have to play out this way, but this is Philadelphia and, unfortunately, it did.

Two men stormed into a North Philadelphia grocery store looking for free money early yesterday. When the clerk behind the register - Egyptian immigrant Mustafa Shaker, 50, a husband and father of two - refused to give them money, one of them shot him with a sawed-off shotgun. Shaker was pronounced dead at the scene. Another store clerk was uninjured.

"It was a senseless, vicious killing," Homicide Unit Capt. James Clark said at a news conference yesterday afternoon. "You have these thugs who come in, they don't get a dime from him, and they still shoot him. It's senseless."

Shaker had been working the midnight-to-8 shift for the past eight months at Trax Foods, on Front Street near Girard Avenue, Clark said. Police released video of the robbery and asked the public for assistance in catching the killers. If anyone has any information about the case, call the Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334 or -3335.

The triggerman was described as a medium-complexioned black male, about 5 feet 8, with a mustache and a possible goatee. He was believed to be in his 20s, wearing a gray, zipped-up hooded sweatshirt and a black baseball cap with "Armani" on it.

The other man was described as black, in his early 20s, about 5 feet 9, and wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with the Nike symbol across the chest. He had a watch with a red or pink band on his left wrist.
