Many have battled to be the king of late night television, but there was never any question about who was the mother of late night TV: Dave's mom.

Dorothy Mengering was the mother of late night host David Letterman who became famous in her own right. The pie-baking Hoosier was a frequent guest and roving correspondent during her son's 33-year comedic reign on network television.

Ms. Mengering died on Tuesday. She was 95.

She leaves behind three children, five grandchildren and a TV legacy unlike any other.

I got all the J Geils Band records. Huge/popular band in my high skoolen years and I
bought their records. So I was trying to refresh my memory quickly on You Tube of
my records and what might be my favorites but it will take a little longer than 15 minutes.
So their biggest hit was "Give it to me" and I dint know it at the time but its a bona-fide
reggae tune and maybe why it was such a hit. The "Full House Live" LP was a great one.
J.Geils made a name for himself.

When Comcast raised cable prices in Seattle by about 40%... That was it for TV at ***'s place. And CBS later pulled the plug on the computer access (free), Letterman was gone tu! Pissed me off more'n everything else. Used ta watch CSI, NCIS, and Criminal Minds, and oh yeah "The Good Wife"! Great shows all.

But "Dave's Mom" was always a surprise guest. And added something to his schtick. Miss him, and 'mom' tu.

Dave's mom died a day before her son's 70th birthday.

Gretchen Letterman posted this message to Facebook after her mom's passing:

" 'Old age is not for sissies,' " Dorothy said often, with certain pride that she knew darn well she was not one. Peace to my dear, dear mother, who this afternoon decided it was finally time to say goodbye."

Steelers chairman Dan Rooney dies at 84

Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney, one of the NFL's most influential and popular executives, has died. He was 84.

A Steelers spokesman confirmed that Rooney died Thursday. No further details were immediately available.

Rooney took over operation of the team in the 1960s from his father, Art, who founded the franchise. From there, Dan Rooney oversaw NFL championships for a team that had never before played in an NFL title game.

"Few men have contributed as much to the National Football League as Dan Rooney," commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he was one of the finest men in the history of our game and it was a privilege to work alongside him for so many years. Dan's dedication to the game, to the players and coaches, to his beloved Pittsburgh, and to Steelers fans everywhere was unparalleled. He was a role model and trusted colleague to commissioners since Bert Bell, countless NFL owners, and so many others in and out of the NFL.

"A voice of reason on a wide range of topics, including diversity and labor relations, Dan always had the league's best interests at heart. For my part, Dan's friendship and counsel were both inspiring and irreplaceable. My heart goes out to Patricia, Art, and the entire Rooney family on the loss of this extraordinary man."

Under Rooney's direction, the Steelers won four championships in six years -- Super Bowls IX, X, XIII and XIV. He also played a large role in assembling the 1974 draft class, considered the greatest class in NFL history, in which the Steelers picked four future Hall of Famers -- Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth and Mike Webster.

Among his lasting accomplishments was his role in the establishment of the Rooney Rule, which was created in 2003 and requires teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation positions. The rule was named in honor of Rooney, who had served as chairman of the league's diversity committee.

Off the field, Rooney was appointed U.S. ambassador to Ireland in 2009 by President Barack Obama and served until his resignation in 2012. In March 2016, the Jackie Robinson Foundation honored Rooney with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
