First Philly homicide of 2011

A 24-year-old man returning from a New Year's celebration Saturday morning in Feltonville was killed, and his female companion shot and injured, in an apparent robbery attempt, Philadelphia police said.

The pair were returning home from a nearby nightclub around 6:25 a.m. when they were accosted by an unknown robber who shot the man, identified by police as Rawl Mitchell of the 1200 block of Longshore Avenue in the city's Oxford Circle section, multiple times in the torso, police said.

 

Mitchell's 23-year-old companion was shot once in the leg.

Both were taken by private vehicle to Frankford Hospital, where Mitchell was pronounced dead, said Officer Christine O'Brien, a police spokeswoman.

It was the first homicide of 2011.

The woman, who was not named, was in stable condition, O'Brien said.
