Got a report we rear ended another train this afternoon near Syracuse. All I heard is one broken arm so far. Derailment up at Port Newark. Second time this year for the young conductor. I think he was blinded by lunar lites and ran through a switch, then pulled his train back through it.

This is just like a Drainorders team:

Heat damage a cause in train crash?

By: Jay Hermacinski
MORRISTOWN, Ind. (WISH) - While CSX officials investigate Wednesdays train derailment and subsequent bridge collapse in Shelby County, 24-Hour News 8 has been investigating a possible cause for the crash: a phenomenon called heat kinking.

Heat kinking occurs when a section of rail expands in hot weather and the rail stakes fail to hold it in place.

"On a very hot day, rail temperatures can get up to 130 degrees Farenheit, said Peter Ray, vice president of engineering at the Indiana Rail Road Co. Of course, that steel will want to grow.

Ray said heat kinking is not uncommon. That's why inspecting rail lines is a top priority for rail companies.

The Federal Railroad Administration requires companies to inspect their lines at least once a week, dependent upon the volume of traffic travelling along the rail. Ray said the inspections are done using vehicles that run down the lines.

Most problems are addressed mechanically.

"We have a machine that raises, aligns, cross-levels,and surfaces the track," Ray said.
