Right now this is more imPORTant at the moment. Our grain unloaders are being struck, in an old time 'wildcat' manner.

This could be the action that starts the whole real shutdown of land transport as we know it.

Our trains...grainers, are sitting, yarded...

The detention of International Longshore and Warehouse Union president Bob McEllrath yesterday while attending a port protest in Washington sparked wildcat strikes across US West Coast ports today.

Tacoma, Seattle, Everett and Longview all fell victim to strikes with trucks backing up outside closed gates.

In Washington, ILWU president, Mr McGrath and other ILWU members were defending the rights of workers at a new grain export terminal at the port of Longview. Local police reports claimed that hundreds of longshoremen stormed the Port of Longview, overpowering security guards and damaging railroad cars.

A Port of Seattle spokesman confirmed to local press that longshoremen did not turn up to work today, while at Everett, longshoremen reportedly walked out at 1.30 am.

Craig Merrilees, spokesman for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, said the organisation had not called for the stoppages.

Well...uh, hey man leave me alone. I'm stoned. Again...

Update: Judge orders Longshoremen to stand down

A Cowlitz County Sheriff grabs a union worker by the throat as police move in on several hundred union workers blocking a grain train in Longview, Wash., on Wednesday. Longshoremen blocked the train as part of an escalating dispute.

LONGVIEW, Wash. A federal judge is ordering union protesters to halt illegal activity as they battle for the right to work at a new grain terminal in Washington state. The judge issued a preliminary injunction to restrict union activity, saying today there is no defense for recent aggressive tactics.

Earlier police in Washington said hundreds of Longshoremen stormed the Port of Longview early Thursday, overpowered security guards and damaged railroad cars and dumped grain that is the center of a labor dispute.

It appears the controversy has spilled over into the ports of Seattle and Tacoma.

Longview Police Chief Jim Duscha says six guards were held hostage for a couple of hours after 500 or more Longshoremen broke down gates about 4:30 a.m. and smashed windows in the guard shack. He says no one was hurt and nobody has been arrested. Most of the protesters have returned to their union hall.

Wildcat strike?

The Seattlepi.com reports that Longshoremen did not show up to work Thursday morning at the Port of Seattle and other Western Washington ports, effectively shutting down the ports' terminals.

The Longshoremen's international union is investigating reports of a wildcat strike at the ports of Seattle and Tacoma.

ILWU spokesman Craig Merrilees says union officials are trying to sort out what is happening at the two Washington ports and were not sure on Thursday morning if the strike is related to union activity in Longview.

The spokesman at union headquarters in San Francisco says it appears Longshoremen in Seattle and Tacoma have taken action on their own. Merrilees did not know how many workers are involved and to what extent the apparent wildcat action has spread.

During the morning ruckus in Longview, Duscha says brake lines were cut on a train and grain was spilled from cars.

The union believes it has the right to work at the facility, but the company has hired a contractor that's staffing a workforce of other union laborers.

Fuck! It's over already!

Trucks At Ports Moving Again After Longshoremen Return To Work

After a day-long walkout by longshoremen at the ports of Tacoma and Seattle, truck traffic is moving again in Seattle, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Dubois said.Dubois said he received a tweet from a longshoreman who said he went back to work at 2 a.m., and shortly after 7 a.m., Dubois said he saw trucks moving at the ports.Thursdays walkouts were sparked by union activity in Longview, where police said hundreds of Longshoremen stormed the port, overpowered and held security guards, damaged railroad cars, and dumped grain at a new grain mill that is the center of a labor dispute.Longshoreman international union spokesman Craig Merrillees said local workers are upset after seeing a photo of ILWU President Bob McEllrath being detained by police in Longview. He said big grain companies are trying to cheat workers in the community in Longview and described the work stoppage in Seattle and Tacoma as a "sympathy move" to support workers there.
