A Portland mother has pleaded not guilty to alleged drunk driving and child neglect charges after she was found slumped in the driver's seat of her car as her two-year-old son left the vehicle to get help.

Cassandra C. Kimmel, 28, was unconscious on Southeast 32nd Avenue Monday when her son knocked on a resident's door at about 7 p.m., according to a probable cause affidavit. The male homeowner asked the toddler where his parents were and the child pointed to the parked car.

The affidavit said the man called 9-1-1 after Kimmel did not respond when he banged on the driver's side window.

After regaining consciousness, Kimmel told authorities she had been driving her son to different stores in search of a Halloween costume, but admitted to having three or four lemonade vodka drinks that afternoon, the affidavit said. Kimmel also said she had taken three or more oxycodone pills an hour in the morning for wisdom tooth pain.

Kimmel told authorities she thought she was parked around the corner from her home, but she was actually four miles away, the affidavit said.

Vodka and lemonade were found in Kimmel's car and she had a blood-alcohol level of .23 percent, nearly three times the legal limit, the affidavit said. Kimmel was arrested and her son was taken into protective custody by police.

Kimmel was booked into jail on Monday and was released on Tuesday. On the same day, she was arraigned on accusations of DUII, reckless endangering and child neglect in Multnomah County Circuit Court.
