Tina Turner turns 73 today. (November 26, 2012)

 Tina Turner, one of the most important women in the history of rock and roll, turns 73 years old today.

 She became a star alongside her husband, the songwriter and promoter Ike Turner. Songs like "River Deep, Mountain High" were built on her powerhouse vocal, and their cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary" took on legendary status, particularly on stage.

 They were major stars, but Ike's severe drug addiction caused problems, and their marriage was violent and abusive. After Tina revealed explicit details of that abuse in her 1980s autobiography, Ike became the iconic wife beater, and his musical accomplishments largely faded from everyone's memories.

 Tina staged a major career comeback in her mid-40s with a series of hits on MTV. Her videos and live performances proved that she was still a dynamic performer, and a new generation of fans discovered her. The publication of her autobiography, and the subsequent movie version starring Angela Bassett, made her story a part of show business history.

 She still records, she still performs, and she still rocks.
