NPR announced Friday morning that it will no longer produce the Monday-to-Thursday call-in show Talk of the Nation.

It will be replaced by Here and Now, a show produced in partnership with member stationWBUR in Boston. Reported stories will be part of the show's format.

Neal Conan, Talk of the Nation's host, will depart after more than three decades with the network. His past positions include stints as bureau chief in New York and London and as NPR's foreign editor, managing editor and news director.

NPR executives said public radio has a glut of vibrant call-in shows involving national issues and that they sought a newsmagazine with a mix of interviews and prepared stories to bridge the hours betweenMorning Edition and All Things Considered.

Executives said the move is not budget-related, though the network is running a $7 million deficit this fiscal year. Executives say Conan was welcome to stay with NPR and that they intend to offer jobs to every staffer working for Talk of the Nation.

Here and Now host Robin Young will be joined by Jeremy Hobson ofMarketplace Morning Report, and NPR reporters will be contributing work as well.

Here and Now is on far fewer stations than Talk of the Nation  182 versus 407 but it has been growing. NPR executives hope stations that previously carried Talk of the Nation will pick up its replacement.

Science Friday, NPR's weekly science talk show that airs at the end of the workweek in the hours that Talk of the Nation broadcasts from Monday to Thursday, is to continue.

One of our NPR affiliates... The one I tune to more often than not, KPLU... For the Jazz that's on from the end of "Morning Edition" at 0900 until "All Things..." opens at 1500, although I support both, KPLU and KUOW financially...

NPR is my de facto news source. One or the other is on my radio, when I'm hangin' at home. And the car and the Fuck Uke Ranger radios are tuned ta the local NPR frequencies...gettin' my money's worth outa both!

I dunno what Oregon Public Radio runs weekdays. I'll hafta search when I move, but surely ATC, and Morning Edition will be run weekdays! Call it an addiction... After a few years of listening ta these programs, ya miss the stories behind the news, and the voices especially the voices...of the reporters...

I can get by just fine if NPR was to disband and drop-off the face of the earth.
It's all Rockefeller controlled and the Rockefellers have this agenda. The PBS
thing is "money-sucking" oraganization. Non-stop pledging/beggin for money
to play more programs that will attract more people to beg from.

Yeah, I prefer my news from Rupert Murdoch.
He and the Fux Organization are have my best interests front and center -- "Fair and Balanced".
