Slim Whitman
Slim Whitman stayed at No 1 in the UK pop charts with Rose Marie for 11 weeks in 1955, a run that would not be bettered for 36 years. Photograph: Redferns

The singer Slim Whitman, who has died aged 90, was a noteworthy figure in country music, since, although he was hugely popular outside the US, for most of his career he was almost forgotten in his own country. In the 1970s, two decades after his American heyday, he still commanded enough of a following in the UK to be voted the No 1 international star in a music poll four times.

Much of the reason for his success outside the US was his high, clear, strong singing and almost operatic yodelling, characteristics that several generations in Britain, Australia and South Africa have assimilated into their notions and fantasies of the old west of America. One of Whitman's chief models was Wilf Carter, a Nova Scotian yodeller and singer of cowboy songs who was popular throughout north America in the 30s and 40s under the sobriquet Montana Slim..

Apologies to Mr. Cy, and of course, especially the Whitman family.

Unfortunate case of skimming the Tony Soprano messages.

Missed that one.

It's ok, it's not like it's never happened before, I may possibly have been guilty of it myself a time or two. I would have to review through the vast BJ files to see if I have committed this particular crime. I know there are others. Tu.

I got to listen to Slim Whitman records because my folks had
several of his records being big C&W fans. As a kid I loved his
music and so did everybody else. Slim Whitman was as "cool
as the other side of the pillow" in the 1960's. Unless you were
to catch him in concert, all you had were the LP covers to look
at. So that's what Slim Whitman looks like. Thats the way it
was back then unless he made it on a TV show in B&W you
really dint know the guy but you cant ever forget his songs/
music that quite simply is "all-classic". You can play his music
for enjoyment (seriously) or turn his music into novelty apps
which always gets rave reviews.

Astrologically speaking...Slim Whitman born on Jan 20 1924
in Tampa FL. Those Jan 20th birthdays are always on the cusp
of last day Capricorn and first day of Aquarius. Slim's Sun just
catches the last degree of Capricorn which has produced some
very powerful singers. So looking at Slim's chart (with no exact
time of birth known, we use 12 noon) you got the Capricorn
Sun and Cancer Moon which are opposites but both are
"Cardinal Signs". Slim's Cancer Moon is conjunct his Pluto which
means he can pour his soul into his singing and then to
make this circuit "complete", it opposed by a Mercury in
Capricorn (in retrograde). It really sums up Slim Whitmans
recording career. Just the right components to pull it off...
to end up in the HOF.
