ND pumps record 313.5M barrels of oil in 2013

The Bakken and 3-Forks places in western ND have really

shaken-up the rail traffic for most of the USA and Canada

the last year especially and 2014 already has several

derailments and oil spills. This shipping oil on rail sounds

very feasable but a lot of derailments and the huge

disaster in Quebec as the topper worst case scenario.

How soon can new fleets of much toughr designed tank

cars be available to keep the railroads hauling the oil.

Seems the older cars havent done so well in derailments.

This new oil business booming on BNSF mainlines has

really made for a bottleneck that Amtrak cant get through

ND without huge delays. ND also has a grain harvest that

is record and there is dozens of grain trains sitting around

on sidings. Would have to say this Bakken oil business came

on so fast that the railroad was "unprepared".

No matter how bad ya think it is on the rail, consider this:

Well I hope the railroads do some adjusting on the oil trains.
On the BN when you had hazardous in your train you were
a "key train" which meant a 45mph speed limit which is slower
than track speed. Notice that 80 cars of crude seems to be
the standard oil train today. They may have to go to 60 car
trains until they can build some tougher tankcars. Having a
lot of loaded oil trains on your railroad and all running with
a 40-45mph speed restriction is going to gum up the works
soon enough. Glad I'm not a BNSF Dispatcher in charge
of any trackage in North Dakota.

The stupid motherfuckers would go a long ways towards living with the communities they bisect by taking some of their records profits to reach out and work aggressively with the communities to erect quiet zones and modify stupid rules, slow orders, poor signal and siding locations, and conditions that cause impact to the communities. Instead, they bleed their employees for every last nickel to make themselves look good for the end of quarter report.

Blowing up towns and running 80 trains a day/night through a town only increases the lobbying for pipelines. They'll keep doing things the way they are doing until the business goes away and then bleed their employees some more.

 Amen, brother.

Snippy apologizes to TW5k for using offensive language and holding in his true feelings in about the duopolist motherfuckers running (North) AmeriKKKa's Class 1 railroads.

Going through some copies of BN News back in the 1970's,
the big thing then was the "coal slurry pipelines" that were
going to take away the railroad business. Dont know how that
turned out.

There was never a coal slurry pipeline built except the Black Mesa one that was already operating. Now, gone because of ager demands and other factors:

This is an issue of where the railroads are taking new business that would traditionally be handled by pipeline. It has been far flung and allowed the railroads to develop an entirely new LONG HAUL market. They have responded by just doing thing the way they've always done it. Shitty training, shitty maintenance, shitty dispatching, shitty attitude, and absolute disdain for the communities they (used to) serve.

As Snippy said, "Everybody knows that the first responder in any situation is "Gus": http://www.flatheadbeacon.com/articles/article/as_more_oil_rides_the_rails_bnsf_prepares_for_the_worst/37872/

Not sure what the apology is for Snip but, OK no offense taken.  I am still somewhat programmed to see the big picture as it relates to the 5 guiding principles of How We Work & Why. Feelings other than passionate for the profit margin railroading are generally not in the glossary,eh.  Reportable accident criteria are not quite clear, but we think we believe that rail  freight operations are actually probably, maybe for sure improving their safety record, according the the transport regulatory bodies and the old testament thumping, big oil errand boy Prime Minister of Canuckistahn hisownselph !
