Alright already we know it costs more ta make a penny, than the damn thing's worth! But the good ol' nickel? Seriously... Whaddya propose replacing the 5 cent piece with?

It takes more than a penny to make a penny. But that may, er, change.

President Barack Obamas budget for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1 says the Treasury is doing a comprehensive review of U.S. currency, including the production and use of coins.

Three separate studies are looking at alternative metals for production, U.S. mint facilities, and how consumers use currency.

These studieswill result in the development of alternative options for the penny and the nickel, the presidents fiscal year 2015 budget says.

The budget notes that the production and circulation of currency in the U.S. has been mostly unchanged for decades, in spite of the growth of electronic financial transactions. Treasury says the review is to efficiently promote commerce in the 21^st century.

The budget doesnt mention phasing out either the penny or the nickel. There are those who want the penny out of circulation, like the Cambridge, Mass.-based group Retire the Penny.

The cost to make a penny was 1.8 cents in 2013, according to the U.S. Mint. It cost 9.4 cents to make a nickel. Costs came down compared to 2012 as metal prices fell.
