After almost a year in business, the owners of Jack&June, a Railyard restaurant at 300 Canopy Street, have closed the doors.
As the lunch hour arrived Thursday, the umbrellas that shaded diners from the summer sun were gone from outside Jack&June. A white piece of paper hung on the door to alert potential customers of the news.
Partner Devon Seacrest said in a news release: "We looked at comparable establishments, but the bottom line is, nobody knew how the public would respond and how the area would behave. There is no doubt that from day one weve always had an incredibly talented team. Sometimes you just miss the mark and wish that you had better luck. With the overall success of the Railyard and the data weve gathered, we are confident that someone can succeed where we left off.
Real estate developer WRK LLC, for whom Seacrest formerly worked, will take over the space, Seacrest said. He would not elaborate on the release and said confidentiality agreements prevent him from identifying other partners.
Competition in the area has expanded significantly over the past year with the opening of Pinnacle Bank Arena and the entertainment district that sprouted alongside in the West Haymarket.
The list of new dining options in the entertainment district alone includes Hiro 88, Mellow Mushroom, Jimmy John's, El Mariachi Taco Cantina, Longwells, Buffalo Wings and Rings, Rule G, VEGA and Gate 25.
The Mexican joint in Uke's 'hood hasn't done the bang-up bizness that they prepared for, plus they expanded their dining area a few months ago. The place is so close ta Balmer Yard that they could smell each other... But they're competing with China Express across the street (cheap/filling), and an Asian place (Time For Pho) Vietnamese maybe, in the same strip.*
While Josefina's Mexican Grill is a pretty good feed, it just can't beat the Chinese for hours. The 'Express stays open till after 2300, damn near every day. The Mex joint closes at 2100 every night! Can't see 'em lasting much longer at this location with all the competition nearby.
There's pizza a quarter mile from Balmer. A great burger joint, and a big grocery store open 24/7/365.
*And a 'medical' marijuana dispensary just opened across the way tu! (This may force Uke ta reconsider the Oregon move...)

That "Rule G" joint is in Uncle Warren's 'hood, and 2LARRCO has a very large installation located there tu!
Uke's medical condition precluded the move twice. Last summer 'they' had the corpse set for a liver/kidney transplant. Complex medication regimen intervened however. A ten-day testing (pee-pee, and blood) has forestalled transplant surgery for now.
Uke will relocate as soon as 'they' say "Bye-bye, go away!" Until then...

Interesting the word "Oregano" is mentioned. Yesterday after the nearly
2" of rain Wednesday all my "blooming oregano" plants are all stalks
laying down as the wet-weight is too much. Perfect time to harvest.
Actually when oregano goes to seed the plant is past its usefulness
as fresh cut herb. I keep them around blooming as long as possible
because the bees and many other small flying insects love the
oregano blossums but if you wait too long before cutting them down,
the seeds will end up in my gravel driveway. So today was perfect
as it was wet and grey out and no bees on the oregano so I cut
all the flowertops ( sounds like fun) and no bees were injured during
the proceedure. Never tried smoking oregano..should I Uke?
